Abstract
It is a pleasure to write the foreword to the Proceedings of the Fourth Conference of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences. This volume contains abstracts of circa 100 papers, 37 of which are to be presented orally and 61 of which are to be presented through posters. The objectives of this Conference, as they were for the first three conferences, are 1. To make the wider public aware of the research done in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences at Mona, and our sister Faculties on the other campuses; 2. To publicize the research done in the Natural Sciences at Mona, Cave Hill and St Augustine to Faculty members in the hope of fostering multi-disciplinary research; 3. To give our postgraduate students the opportunity to present their research in a less hostile environment than normally encountered at Conferences. It is worthwhile to speculate how well this conference is likely to achieve these objectives. First, there are 50% more submissions this year than there were for the third conference.
