Abstract
Field oscillations at α (8–13 Hz) frequencies with a characteristic sinusoidal appearance were readily observed during relaxed wakefulness and were prominent in both the occipital cortex and LGN of chronically implanted, freely moving cats (Supplemental Figure S1A). As reported previously (Lopes da Silva et al., 1973; Chatila et al., 1993), thalamic and cortical α rhythms usually occurred simultaneously (Supplemental Figure S1A), although isolated α activity in the LGN was sometimes observed. The mean frequency of α rhythms was 11.9 ± 1.7 Hz (range 6.5–13.1; n = 4 cats), with the variation in α rhythm frequency for any one cat being below 5%. α rhythms were most prominent when the animal assumed a motionless “sphinx ” position with eyes closed and occurred in discrete episodes lasting about 2–20 s (mean duration: 6.8 ± 0.9 s; n = 40 episodes).
