Until recently, the role of lysosomal cysteine protease cathepsins in intracellular pro-tein degradation was believed to be mainly restricted to scavenging. However, recent studies have revealed nontraditional roles for cysteine protease cathepsins in the ex-tracellular space during the development and progression of cardiovascular disease. Although the precise mechanisms are unknown, data from animal studies suggest that members of the cathepsin family, like other extracellular proteases, contribute to ex-tracellular matrix protein remodeling and interstitial matrix degradation, as well as to cell signaling and cell apoptosis in heart disease. Inflammatory cytokines and hor-mones regulate the expression and secretion of cathepsins in cultured cardiovascular cells and macrophages. Serum levels of cathepsins L, S, and K and their endogenous inhibitor cystatin C may be useful predictive biomarkers in patients with coronary ar-tery disease and cardiac disease. Furthermore, in vivo pharmacological intervention with a synthetic cathepsin inhibitor and cardiovascular drugs (including statins and angiotensin II type 1 receptor antagonists) has the potential for pharmacologic target-ing of cathepsins in cardiovascular disease. This review focuses on cathepsin biology

This case report highlights qEEG and LORETA measures as well as training protocols for a client experiencing self-reported chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). Specifically, we were interested in whether or not the presentation of visual changes secondary to chemotherapy would be responsive to neurofeedback training (NFB). After 20 sessions of NFB, the client reported improvement in all reported symptoms of neuropathy, although her vision did not improve as drastically as the other symptoms.

A comparative literature research study was conducted and consisted of an analysis of two articles. Study one, by Peniston and Kulkosky, looks at Vietnam veterans with PTSD and the use of neurofeedback as a treatment modality. Study two, by Scott, Kaiser, Othmer, and Sideroff, examines the effect of neurofeedback as an additional therapeutic modality for people with chemical addictions. Both studies employ use of similar neurofeedback training methods.
