Abstract
Page 2 This research is concerned with the design and development of technologies to support information flow during shift change which is a relatively unexplored area in Human-Computer Interaction. Shift work involves synchronous, near-synchronous and asynchronous aspects of co-located collaboration. I have chosen the nurses ’ shift change in a local hospital to be the specific setting in which to investigate how the flow of critical medical information can be supported by technology. Previous research on information flow has mainly focused on information shared across boundaries of departments and organizations or on the designing of applications to support concurrent informal or formal meetings among co-located or distributed workgroups. There is not sufficient understanding on how the complex information sharing processes take place in co-located collaboration in general or specifically during the brief nurses ’ shift change in the hospital setting. Furthermore, we do not yet know what technologies are appropriate for supporting such an intensive flow of information. We also do not know if the findings from this specific setting can be generalized to the broader context of co-located collaboration supporting both synchronous and asynchronous activities.
