Abstract
Current production planning research emphasizes particular techniques for solving specific problems within large companies. Less emphasis has been placed on integrating these ' tools economically into small companies. This thesis describes an integrated production planning system designed to help small custom job shops on an interactive, time-shared basis. The heart of the system is an on-line data base which coordinates the engineering, marketing and production areas of the firm. This complex network type data base consists of 11 multi-chained files. A specialized data management system maintains these files and provides access to them. It permits the user to operate on the data using only knowledge of its logical structure thereby freeing him from any need, to understand its internal physical
