Abstract

founded in 1997, is a worldwide scholarly society dedicated to research and education at the interface between the biological and computational sciences: the discipline of bioinformatics. Each year, the ISCB hosts the premier international bioinformatics meeting, Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology (ISMB). With the conference series pre-dating the Society by a few years, the 2008 annual meeting was the 16th in the series. It was held in July 2008 in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in central Toronto, Canada. In the still short lifetime of the ISMB conference series, bioinformatics has evolved from a specialist interest of a relatively few computer experts into a discipline that is becoming part of the research mainstream. This has been reflected in an ISMB programme that has broadened over the years to give it a much wider appeal, with experimental biologists and even clinicians in larger numbers. Over 1700 delegates attended the main meeting and/or the associated pre-conference meetings: satellite or special interest group (SIG) meetings in specialist areas, tutorials or the active ISMB Student Council’s fourth annual symposium. Over 35 % of the papers presented during the whole series of 16 ISMB meetings were given either in Toronto or at last year’s meeting, in Vienna, which was held jointly with the European Conference in Computational Biology (ISMB/ECCB 2007, www.iscb.org/ismbeccb2007). ISMB delegates now only come together for the twice daily keynote lectures by research leaders, with the rest of the meeting split into parallel tracks. There were eight such tracks in Toronto, with proceedings tracks of original research papers published as the conference proceedings in an online issue of Bioinformatics
