Abstract
Increasing intake of fruits and vegetables can improve diet quality for many because of the relationship to chronic disease prevention. It has also been suggested that eating plenty of fruits and vegetables can help prevent overweight. We reviewed the evidence and report on the relationship between greater fruit and vegetable consumption and healthy weight. Tohill et al. (2004) examined the literature regarding associations between higher intake of fruit and vegetables and lower body weight in free living populations. These authors concluded that the few studies addressing this relationship varied in methodology and did not consistently support an association. The most notable finding was the association between a higher variety of fruits and vegetables consumed and lower body fat. The review only included two studies involving children (Field et al. 2003; Lin and Morrison 2003). Field et al. (2003) assessed changes in BMI of children and adolescents over a 3-year period and did not find a relationship between intake of fruits, juice or vegetables and changes in BMI z-score in boys or girls. Lin and Morrison (2003) used CSFII (1994-1996, 1998) food consumption data to show that fruit but not vegetable consumption varied by weight status in adults and older children.
