Abstract
With the Internet experiencing massive growth, new ways to recover ever rising costs and regulate network usage are becoming increasingly important. Murphy et al [3] have developed a dynamic bandwidth pricing algorithm which claims to not only generate revenue for Internet providers, but also motivate users to share limited network resources in a fair manner. This paper summarizes simulations of a simple one switch network that implements the Murphy et algorithm. The results show first that the algorithm is very conservative in bandwidth allocation, operating well below 50% utilization. Second, a steady state equilibrium is reached when the user community is not homogeneous. Thirdly, the price per unit of resource increases as the number of users on the network increases but by a decreasing amount.
