Abstract
It is not possible to have a fair evaluation of edge detectors as edges are usually presented with simple synthetic images or real images that entail lots of semantic objects. We propose to elaborate a human expertise of edge detection by looking at zooms of small areas and to let humans build reference maps manually. Then it is possible to evaluate edge detectors and to undertake a classification of errors. This evaluation is rich of experience and leads to a better understanding of the problems occurring in edge detection. 1 Introduction Many different edge detection techniques have already been proposed. For instance, those of Sobel, Marr and Hilldreth, Canny or Haralick are well known [1],[5], [8],[12]. However, since several techniques exist and new algorithms are proposed each year, a consistent evaluation of detectors becomes more and more necessary.
