Abstract
The thermostat nonlinearity is the simplest form of history-dependent feedback control with a discontinuity. We consider here a class of distributed parameter control problems with feedback involving a thermostat whose time-dependent setting u(\Delta) is now taken as a control to be optimized. Existence of an optimal control is shown first for (known) input, and then considered for a formulation of the problem with a stochastically modeled input. 1. Introduction The type of problem we wish to consider may be described, somewhat vaguely, as follows: Consider the heat distribution in a region\Omega (e.g., a house), coupled through the boundary conditions with the external heat flux. This is to be regulated for comfort by a furnace or air conditioner actuated by a thermostat. Here we assume the thermostat has a clock so the (time-dependent) setting can be specified.
