Abstract
this report is to analyse relations between action concepts and concepts of function and failure. The investigation is based on the theory of action developed by VonWright (1963) and explore the formalized framework offered by this theory to define the relations between action concepts and concepts of function and failure. The work reported here is part of the authors research on formalization of means-end concepts for the analysis of complex industrial automation systems (see also (Lind, 1994) and (Lind, 2001)). It should be noted that the work is of preliminary nature and may therefore contain material that is inconclusive.
