Abstract
events are prototypically represented in memory, and that the identification of an event as immoral depends on its similarity to an event prototype. It was hypothesized that a similarity would facilitate the identification process and hence reduce the time required to reach a judgment. A sample of 21 persons participated in the experiment in which each participant classified 16 sentences depicting 8 typical and 8 atypical events as immoral or not. The response time for each judgment was recorded. As expected, the typical targets were judged with greater speed than the atypical ones, and the effect proved significant even after controlling for differences in the degree of inappropriateness between the target events. This finding is taken as partial support for the idea of immoral event prototypes.
