Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a common and costly chronic medical illness that affects more than 16 million Americans (1). Individuals with diabetes are at greater risk of long-term complications such as kidney disease, peripheral vascular disease, lower extremity ulcers and amputations, retinopathy, and neuropathy. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, and the total direct and indirect costs in the United States due to diabetes mellitus have been estimated at $102 billion per year (2).
