Abstract

Although Amazigh is one of the oldest languages and is known to be the indigenous language of people in Morocco for centuries, this language is still neglected and not given its actual significance. Amazigh activists and intellectuals still reject the status of Amazigh as a national language, calling for the standardisation of the language. The establishment of the Moroccan Institute for Amazigh Culture and the incorporation of Amazigh in primary schools are seen as insufficient steps to promote the status of this language. This study aims at exploring the ethnic and linguistic identity of Amazigh females in Kelaa Sraghna. The latter’s proximity to certain regions featured by the existence of Amazigh tribes and towns causes exogamy to take place. The focus in the study is on investigating the maintenance or loss of the Amazigh identity of the female.
