Abstract
the withdrawal from territories and the uprooting of Jewish settlements represents a severe threat both on the symbolic level—challenging their cultural and religious worldviews—and on the concrete level—conceding to Palestinian violence. In the months preceding the pullout, the leadership of the settler movement seemed confident that the disen-gagement would never actually take place. This sentiment was not only expressed in the rhetoric of the leaders but was evident in the daily lives of the settlers, many of whom continued to sow fields and remodel houses in an area that would be destroyed only several months later. The current research set out to examine whether this denial of an unfolding reality that presents a severe threat to fun-damental religious and ideological beliefs may be related to the propensity to react violently against the proposed change. Because religious and ideological beliefs have been shown to serve as fundamental death-denying mech-anisms, this research was conducted from the perspective of terror management theory (TMT) (e.g., Greenberg, Pyszczynski, & Solomon, 1997). Specifically, we were inter-ested in determining whether subtle reminders of per-sonal death would elicit more support of violent resistance to the disengagement plan among right-wing Israelis,1 set-tlers, and their supporters and whether this effect would be most pronounced among participants high in denial— those who refused to believe that the government decision to uproot settlements from the Gaza Strip and Northern West Bank would ever materialize.
