Abstract

The SAFMC manages coral, coral reefs and live/hard bottom habitat, including deepwater corals, through the South Atlantic Coral Fishery Management Plan. Mechanisms exist in the FMP as amended to further protect deepwater coral and live/hard bottom habitats. The SAFMC Habitat and Environmental Protection Advisory Panel and Coral Advisory Panel have supported proactive efforts to identify and protect deepwater coral ecosystems in the South Atlantic region. The Council has endorsed the Panels ’ recommendation for designation of new deepwater Coral Habitat Areas of Particular Concern under the Federal Coral FMP. New deepwater coral HAPCs will be designated through the Fishery Ecosystem
