Abstract
The seminar’s focus is bridging the gap between the culture of contemporary employment (employers and employment agencies) and mature-aged job-seekers. Firstly the ‘problem ’ of employing older workers is examined. Then the difficulty of advising these potential workers is explored. Thirdly the problems facing these job-seekers are noted. The latter includes the changing culture of work and the fact that their experience may not be credentialed. As a contribution towards bridging this identified cultural gap, an instrument, the Individual Learning Audit Process (ILAP), has been developed. The presentation identifies the ‘gap ’ and outlines how ILAP has been designed to help bridge the gap. Barrie Brennan is retired from UNE but retains a link as an Honorary Fellow. He continues to be involved in the field through writing, research and consultancy. A major focus of these activities is adult learning. The presentation reports on a pilot project conducted in 2003. The project was initiated by ALA and involved research and consultation and the testing out of the instrument in Lithgow. Those participating will have the opportunity to comment on the assumptions in which the instrument is based as well as the instrument itself. The theme Bridging cultures brings into focus the big picture of the relationship between the current dominant culture and that of the indigenous people of this island or cultures represented by our neighbours or of those who have come to live on the island continent. But there are other smaller cultural bridging challenges for select groups within the population. The paper's focus is bridging the gap between the contemporary employment culture- of employers and employment agencies- and mature aged job seekers. The argument of the paper is that the gap between the lived experiences of members of this group and the existing employment culture needs to be bridged for the sake of those in the target group and those who seek to service them. As a contribution to this bridge building an instrument called the Individual Learning Audit Process (ILAP) has been developed. The paper explains the instrument.
