Abstract
Adolescents constitute nearly 22 per cent of the population of India [Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India 2001]. They are a vulnerable group, especially in terms of nutrition and health. Adolescent girls in particular have considerable unmet needs in terms of health, especially reproductive health, and nutrition. This is in large part due to the lack of targeted health services for adolescents, widespread gender discrimination and son-preference that prevail and limit adolescent girls ’ access to health services as well as the practice of early marriage and childbearing that persists and puts adolescent girls and their children at increased risk of adverse outcomes. early marriage and its Consequences The prevalence of early marriage is 44.5 per cent in India overall (52.5 per cent in rural areas) (NFHS-3, 2005-06).
