Abstract

The current emphasis on lightwave systems is on increasing the spectral efficiency of WDM systems. One of the techniques that is used for achieving high spectral efficiency in WDM systems is vestigial side band demultiplexing. This thesis reports the modeling and analysis of an experimental 40 Gbit/s WDM system, which used vestigial side band demultiplexing. The modeling and analysis is carried out using FiberSim, the fiber optic simulator developed at Information and Telecommunication Technology Center, University of Kansas. The 40 Gbit/s experimental WDM system used vestigial side band demultiplexing to achieve a spectral efficiency of 0.64 bit/s/Hz and 5 Tbit/s capacity over 1200 km of Teralight Ultra fiber. Simulations are performed to find the pump powers used in the experimental system and a fiber-EDFA equivalent for the Raman amplification used in the experimental system is also developed. Analyses on various optical parameters like channel launch power, dispersion compensation scheme etc is carried out to find their significance on the system performance.
