Abstract
this paper, a smaller but fully representative group is then chosen for further description and subsequent discussion. A full description of the standards and the production life-cycle of a typical smartcard is attempted. The aim is to raise the security issues taken into consideration in the manufacture of the smartcard. Points highlighted here are assumed known and referenced frequently in the subsequent parts of the paper. The second section discusses the incorporation of the smartcard into two (2) schemes and shows what roles smartcards play in the security protocol of the schemes. The schemes are the Kerberos security protocol and Universal Electronic Payment system (UEPS). The following section discusses the various possible security attacks against the smarcard (system), counter-measures are also mentioned here. The position of the second and third sections could have been interchanged, and choosing their placement was a dilemma. There are many cross references amongst the two sections and an easy way out would have been to incorporate them together, it however seemed better to have them separated. The concluding section asserts some findings in the course of the study and also states the perceived future of smartcards (system). 1.1 Definition
