This article helps develop the creativity perspective within entrepreneurship in two ways. First, it elaborates on the nature of opportunity as a creative product. Rather than viewing opportunities as single insights, it suggests that they are emerging through the continuous shaping and development of (raw) ideas that are acted upon. Second, rather than attributing them to a particular individual, it highlights the contextual and social influences that affect the generation and shaping of ideas. This helps move entrepreneurship research beyond the single-person, single-insight attribution that currently permeates it.

abstract We apply the prescriptions of the resource-based perspective to develop a model of entrepreneurial opportunity evaluation. We propose that opportunity evaluation decision policies are constructed as future-oriented, cognitive representations of ‘what will be’, assuming one were to exploit the opportunity under evaluation. These cognitive representations incorporate both (1) an evaluation of the existing resource endowments (already under the control of the venture), which may be employed to exploit the opportunity under evaluation, and at the same time (2) an assessment of the future, wealth generating resources that must be marshalled (and subsequently under the control of the venture) in order to exploit the opportunity under evaluation. We empirically test this model using conjoint analysis and hierarchical linear modelling techniques to decompose more than 2300 opportunity evaluation decisions nested in a sample of 73 entrepreneurs. Our findings suggest that entrepreneurs are attracted to opportunities that are complementary to their existing knowledge resources; however, we also identify a set of opportunity-specific and firm-specific conditions that encourage entrepreneurs to pursue the acquisition and control of resources that are inconsistent with the existing, knowledge-based resources of the venture. We identify these conditions and discuss implications for theory, practice, and future research.

During the past fifteen years several studies have explored the phenomenon of the “born global ” of the hi-tech small and medium sized enterprises (HSME). Up to today too little attention has been paid on knowledge related processes and mechanisms, and business models of HSMEs in their market globalization process. The paper aims partly to fulfill the gap exploring “knowledge-market ” development trajectories of becoming global of technology- and knowledge-intensive SMEs from small open economy country origin. To open theoretical background of the topic the paper is mapping main processes of global breakthrough as well as “knowledge-market ” framework of globalization of HSMEs. Empirical study is based on three cases representing ICT and biotech companies completely or partly of Estonian origin: Regio, Skype and Asper Biotech. The results demonstrate three different globalization trajectories named S-, Γ- and rotated L-curve. All cases are characterized by different knowledge accumulation and learning period preceding their globalization and selection of the following business model: B2B, P2P and B2C. The results of the study provide for “new economy ” companies better understanding of strategic options to be followed in internationalization process.

Abstract: This paper applies a novel change-perspective to entrepreneurial learning using the venture as the unit of analysis. The rationales are the need for empirical studies of learning in technoentrepreneurship and that current literature is inconclusive regarding the relationship between learning and performance. Four stylised modes of learning are developed and then related to growth. The four learning modes are derived from two types of learning (experimental and frame-based) and two important dimensions (technology and the Business Model (BM)). An empirical investigation of 36 start-up ventures in the Swedish mobile internet industry indicates that one mode – frame-based technology and experimental BM learning – has a positive relationship with growth. Moreover, it appears that a downstream position in the value-chain might be part of the explanation for the outcome. From a theoretical perspective, it is suggested that the BM is less of a core resource than the technology.

ABSTRACT. Women entrepreneurs are one of the fastest growing groups of informal learners in Canada. Although the Internet presents extensive opportunities for informal learning, it remains an understudied area and little is known of the true nature of the learning that takes place in this mode. In this qualitative study, semi-structured e-mail interviews were used to explore the experiences of four Western Canadian women entrepreneurs who used the Internet for informal business-related learning. A sociocultural perspective was found to be helpful in understanding the nature of their informal learning. Results showed that perceived value of the Internet for informal learning included its capability to provide learner control for access to informational capital via the World Wide Web, and connectivity to social capital via e-mail. A taxonomy of informal learning using the Internet suggests that women entrepreneurs ’ learning exists on a continuum of self-direction, ranging from autonomous (for independent seeking of external learning resources) to relational (for e-mail communication with colleagues as a support), but also includes incidental and social (tacit) learning. Implications for practice and questions for further research are presented. SOMMAIRE.

The goal of this paper is to analyze different approaches to acquir-ing new knowledge. We analyze what means of knowledge acquisi-tion are used by entrepreneurs, such as formal education process, one andmore day professional development workshops, professional coun-selors, professional literature and information on the world wide web. When making a decision on what means to use in order to increase one’s knowledge, entrepreneurs employ different assessment criteria: time and money investment as well as pedagogical techniques used. Time shortage is the most frequently cited reason that entrepreneurs do not invest more personal resources into knowledge acquisition pro-cesses. The main hypothesis we test, postulates that entrepreneurs who invest more time and money into knowledge acquisition processes are more successful. Success is measured with an average annual degree of growth of sale, profits and number of employees in the last four years and with entrepreneur’s opinion concerning success of the company’s business. Finally, we develop the implication for public policy and ed-ucational institutions on the means that need to be employed so that entrepreneurs would invest more resources in knowledge acquisition processes.
