Sport in South Africa has grown into an attractive mega-industry that employs many people. Among the different human resources in a sport organisation is the professional sport coach whose job is multi-faceted. The coach plays an important role in helping the sport organisation in achieving its goals and objectives. The management of professional sport coaches requires human resource managers to implement a range of human resources management functions. Among these are recruitment and selection, training and development, compensation, job security and labour relations. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the afore-mentioned functions in sport coaching. The study utilised a quantitative research approach. Four hundred questionnaires were administered to professional sport coaches drawn across from all nine provinces of South Africa. The data was analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (version-22). Frequencies and percentages were used to report on the demographic variables and Pearson correlations were used to examine the relationship between the selected human resources management functions. A positive practical relationship with a large effect was found between recruitment and selection, training and development, compensation, labour relations and with a medium effect with job security. A positive practical relationship with a medium effect was found between training and development, compensation and a large effect between training and development, job security and labour relations. A positive statistical significant relationship was found between compensation, job security and labour relations. The results indicated that all functions need to be

Both authors contributed equally and have been listed alphabetically. Competitiveness and power relationships: where now for the UK food supply chain? Work in progress paper Under instruction from the OFT (Competition Commission, 1999), the Competition Commission’s report into UK supermarkets published in October 2000 received, rather predictably, a mixed response from the various participants in the food supply chain. Although it found little evidence of monopolistic behaviour, the findings indicated both the significance of buyer concentration and the need for voluntary regulation (Competition Commission, 2000). Recent evidence and further changes to the industry structure suggests that not only will buyer power continue to concentrate in the hands of the major retail players, but further concentration and consolidation in the food retail sector will take place both within and beyond the home market. The relative buyer power of supermarkets has been increasing and this is likely to continue with further consolidation as a result of the impending Safeway merger.

A ‘pervasive’ problem in the social sciences, referred to as the ‘micro-to-macro problem ’ concerns our capacity to explain the relationship between the constitutive elements of social systems (people) and emergent phenomena resulting from their interaction (i.e. organisations, societies, economies). Without a capacity to explain this relationship there is, in effect, no substantive theory of sociality. In this paper we explore the potential of a synthesis between autopoietic and complexity theory for understanding social systems in a way that addresses this issue. It will be argued that autopoietic theory provides a basis for understanding the characteristics of the microlevel agents that make up social systems − human individuals, whilst complexity theory provides a basis for understanding how these characteristics influence the range and type of macro level phenomena that arise from their interaction. The synthesis proposed here provides the basis for a theory of sociality that deals consistently with the relationship between the micro and macro levels of social phenomena and their ontological status. This approach has the potential to re-unite current scientific oppositions and avoid unnecessary pluralism within social science.

The purpose of this paper is to explore motivation from a Christian perspective and its implications for relationships between management and consumers, managers and employees, and stockholders and managers. The contribution of this paper is twofold: first, it provides a brief review of the literature on motivation as it appears in college business-related textbooks. Second, it introduces a philosophical framework and a Christian perspective of motivation and discusses implications for motivating consumers, managers, and employees. This paper is relevant because a Christian perspective on motivation is missing from college textbooks. Business textbooks that do address this phenomenon merely assume that religion is a manifestation of culture; however, we contend that religion influences culture and culture, in turn, influences behavior. Therefore, a better understanding of motivation, particularly from a Christian perspective, is vital. To aid this understanding, our paper summarizes what is presented on motivation in college textbooks; then, it examines motivation from a Christian perspective and discusses implications for the relationships between management and consumers, managers and employees, and stockholders and managers. More significantly, if offers a theoretical, Christian framework on which to discuss motivation from a Christian perspective.

In recent years, organizations have demanded evidence that public relations is effective. Consequently, professionals and scholars alike have looked for the key concepts to establish the value of public relations. The terms “relationships ” and “reputation ” have emerged as the focal concepts in explaining the purpose and value of public relations. The concepts of organization-public relationships and organizational reputation can be integrated within a theoretical framework of public relations effectiveness. When those concepts are integrated in a model, the role of public relations can be captured more clearly than when there is a separate focus on each of the concepts. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the link between organization-public relationships and organizational reputation. In particular, the dissertation examined how organization-public relationships affect organizational reputations in a causal model. Survey research was used to collect data, and structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to empirically test the causal effects of organization-public relationships on organizational reputation for four South Korean-

rebalancing from expert analysis toward participatory deliberation. Linear, scientistic conceptions of innovation are giving ground to more plural, socially situated understandings. Yet, growing recognition of social agency in technology choice is countered by persistently deterministic notions of technological progress. This article addresses this increasingly stark disjunc-ture. Distinguishing between “appraisal ” and “commitment ” in technology choice, it highlights contrasting implications of normative, instrumental, and substantive imperatives in appraisal. Focusing on the role of power, it identi-fies key commonalities transcending the analysis/participation dichotomy. Each is equally susceptible to instrumental framing for variously weak and strong forms of justification. To address the disjuncture, it is concluded that greater appreciation is required—in both analytic and participatory appraisal—to facilitating the opening up (rather than the closing down) of governance commitments on science and technology.
