Inthispaper,anewfree-formshapedeformationapproachisproposed.Wecombineaskeleton-basedmeshdeformationtechniquewithdiscretedifferentialcoordinatesinordertocreatenatural-lookingglobalshapedeformations.Givenatrianglemesh,wefirstextractaskeletalmesh,atwo-sidedVoronoi-basedapproximationofthe medialaxis.Nexttheskeletalmeshismodifiedbyfree-formdeformations.Thenadesiredglobalshapedeformationisobtainedbyreconstructingtheshapecorrespondingtothedeformedskeletalmesh.Thereconstructionis basedonusingdiscretedifferentialcoordinates.Ourmethodpreservesfinegeometricdetailsandoriginalshape thicknessbecauseofusingdiscretedifferentialcoordinatesandskeleton-baseddeformations.Wealsodevelop anewmeshevolutiontechniquewhichallowustoeliminatepossibleglobalandlocalself-intersectionsofthe deformedmeshwhilepreservingfinegeometricdetails.Finally,wepresentamulti-resolutionversionofourapproachinordertosimplifyandacceleratethedeformationprocess.Inaddition,interestinglinksbetweenthe proposedfree-formshapedeformationtechniqueandclassicalandmodernresultsinthedifferentialgeometryof spherecongruencesareestablishedanddiscussed.
