The Open Mind Common Sense project has been collecting common-sense knowledge from volunteers on the Internet since 2000. This knowledge is represented in a machine-interpretable semantic network called ConceptNet. We present ConceptNet 3, which improves the acquisition of new knowledge in ConceptNet and facilitates turning edges of the network back into natural language. We show how its modular design helps it adapt to different data sets and languages. Finally, we evaluate the content of ConceptNet 3, showing that the information it contains is comparable with WordNet and the

Abstract. This paper presents PACO-T, a common sense-aided computational tool that helps teachers on planning culturally contextualized learning activities supported by common sense knowledge. The tool is based on the framework PACO, a seven-step framework for planning learning activities that concerns pedagogical issues, for an effective learning. It implements the framework seven steps and makes available common sense knowledge from the Brazilian Open Mind Common Sense (OMCS-Br) knowledge base, so that teachers can analyze how people with the same profile of their target group talk about themes related to the learning activity which is being planned, and therefore possibly identify the target group's previous knowledge and contextualize the learning activity to its needs. In this way teachers can approach themes which they consider relevant to reach the intended pedagogical goals with that specific target group.

Abstract. This paper describes how to use and to collect the common sense knowledge and how to process such information to create semantic network and to available it for applications. In this context, it is also presented an educational application which uses this knowledge to create a contextualized stories, because this game allows educators being co-authors on creating the story context taking into account their goals, pedagogical approach and the student’s cultural reality. Then, teachers can adopt values, metaphors, cause and consequence relations or even a common vocabulary before and during the narrative game and, consequently, enabling students to feel identified in that story context being considered and get interested and engaged in collaborating with the teacher and other students to develop the story. In order to observe the use of this game in an educational environment and collect the target group opinion, a study case was performed at school with teachers and children, and is described in this paper.

Abstract. We describe a computer-supported game authoring system for educators to co-author a game to help teaching sensitive content, specifically sex education. Our approach provides educators the ability to co-author the game to tailor it to the class based on a computer-supported interface that draws upon a large, cultural database. By targeting the game to the culture of the students, they feel their values, beliefs and vocabulary are being considered in the game, providing better comprehension of the content, leading to stronger learning engagement that is helpful for highly charged, sometimes uncomfortable and sensitive material such as sex. We studied our design in the classroom and observed that giving educators co-authorship of the game helps them adopt using online games.

ABSTRACT Collaborative work via Web tends to increase due to professionals' teams separated by distance and time, demanding more effort and stronger commitment from each person. It is noticed that many times the collaborative work via Web is not effective, generating lack of motivation and no engagement, few effective collaboration and no commitment with the results. It should be considered the cultural differences among the team's members, what interfere on each individual's performance, misunderstanding the task (for instance, the adopted vocabulary) and not motivating to reach the goals (for instance, how the environment looks). This research aims at discussing the process of Motivational Pattern formalizing using common sense knowledge to associate the appropriate colors for the environment to the emotions that these colors can provoke people into engaging, culturally motivating people through significant and appropriate colors in the collaborative environment.

This paper discusses how common sense knowledge can be used by instructors for planning Learning Activities. Using common sense statements which were automatically collected, we are developing software that can be used to support the teaching and learning process, in a more contextualized form. When teachers consider the knowledge that learners already have, taking into account their common sense knowledge, they can devote their attention to correcting misconceptions, covering ignored topics and avoiding the obvious. A Learning Activity [12] is a task that can promote the process of learning in students, stimulating them to think and work on a new concept or topic presented by a teacher. Examples of Learning Activities are a chat about a certain subject, research to explore details about a
