Abstract. Significant difference exists between things that work and things that work well. Availability along with reliability would make Web services the default technology of choice in developing many mission-critical electronic-business applications. Unfortunately, guaranteeing a Web service availability is still a challenge due to the unpredictable num-ber of invocation requests a Web service (e.g., Google Maps) has to han-dle at a time, as well as the dynamic nature of the Internet (e.g., network disconnections). In addition, the heterogeneity, mobility and distributed nature of Web services makes traditional dependability and availability approaches inappropriate for Web services. In this paper, we describe the design of an on-demand replication approach for robust Web service provisioning. This approach dynamically deploys Web services at ap-propriate idle hosts, reducing the unavailability of Web services during peak demand for limited computing resources. In addition this approach promotes the decoupling of Web service providers and Web service host providers, which supports a more flexible replication model.

Abstract—The advent of the Smart City domain has led to the creation of massive amounts of diverse data. Stakeholders in this domain need to be able to analyze this data in order to make informed planning decisions. To address this complex task, Distributed Analytical Environments (DAEs) have emerged. These environments consist of different distributed analytical and data services, which are composed in a dynamic way to deliver insights that are crucial for stakeholders. Since these environments deal with business critical and sensitive informa-tion, strict compliance constraints apply. These constraints lead to situations where certain concrete services are not allowed to exchange data, even though their interaction is necessary to produce the desired results. Finding a valid solution in the space of possible instantiations is a non-trivial problem. In this paper we introduce Nomads, a framework that enables service mobility in such constrained dynamic composition environments to overcome aforementioned restrictions. The framework improves the overall satisfiability and therefore also the quality of constrained DAEs. We outline the requirements of a representative DAE scenario, provide a detailed problem formulation, and then discuss the service mobility framework along with our solution finding algo-rithm. The evaluation demonstrates that the Nomads framework considerably increases the number of successfully performed compositions even in highly constrained environments. I.

Abstract: Availability and reliability of Web services are important issues for developing many electronic business applications. Unfortunately, it is hard to guarantee the availability of a service given that the number of its requests might be potentially huge. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for robust Web service provisioning based on mobile agent and resource discovery technologies. With our approach, new service instance can be instantiated at appropriate idle computing resources on demand, therefore reducing the risk of service being unavailable. We present a matchmaking algorithm for resources selection, as well as a multi-phase resource planning algorithm for composite Web services. 1

Abstract — The potential of truly large scale grids can only be realized with grid architectures and deployment strategies that lower the need for human administrative intervention, and therefore open the grid to wider participation from resources and users. Self-organizing grids (SOGs) are characterized by services, protocols, and deployment strategies that promote true scalability by eliminating administrative bottlenecks. We describe four enabling mechanisms for SOGs—automatically inferring grid structure, tracking and making available dynamic resource state information, unifying the grid service deployment model, and making effective use of intermittently connected grid hosts via lightweight fault tolerance mechanisms that take advantage of the resource fault characteristics. 1 I.

The adoption of the "Web Services" model for building a Grid framework created a considerable shift from the original concept of Grid which was based on "distributed job scheduling". The requirement for the access and integration of heterogeneous data resources over the Grid, and the advances in service-oriented data access standards led to the development of a service-oriented distributed query processor, which forms the basis of this thesis. The adoption of service-orientation raised the need for a framework which would allow demand-driven deployment of Web Services on available resources. Research into such concepts led to the development of DynaSOAr, a framework which proposed an alternative approach to distributed job scheduling by focussing entirely on the concept of services, rather than the more traditional jobs. DynaSOAr allows services to be deployed on demand to meet changing performance requirements and exploits the advances made in virtualization technologies to support the deployment of services and databases.

A grid system is usually composed of thousands of nodes which are broadly distributed in different virtual organizations. Owing to geographical boundaries among these organizations, the system administrators suffer a great pressure to coordinate when grid system experiences a maintaining period. Furthermore, the runtime dynamicity of service state aggravates the complexity of tasks. Consequently, building an efficient and reliable maintaining model becomes an urgent challenge to ensure the correctness and consistency of grid nodes. In our experiment with ChinaGrid, a Dynamic Maintenance mechanism has been adopted in the fundamental grid middleware called ChinaGrid Support Platform. By resolving the above problems with system infrastructure, service dependency and service consistency, the availability of the system can be improved even the scope of maintenance extends to wider region. Abstract: Service-oriented computing is increasingly assuming an important role in the research on distributed sys-tems and software engineering. It has also reached application and service hosters by now who need to be able to host off-the-shelf services as well as custom services. Thus, they are faced with a variety of service descriptions, service package formats and runtime demands. Each service technology usually requires a sep-arate execution platform which eventually leads to a high complexity for the administration and management of services. Similar to the unification of invocation of web services through protocol adapters, it is clearly needed to unify management aspects like monitoring and adaptation of services. We therefore propose an abstraction, a formalisation and a unification layer for hosting environments with the intent to pave the way for technology-agnostic, unified service hosting. 1
