H.264 is the ITU-T’s new, nonbackward compatible video compression Recommendation that significantly outperforms all previous video compression standards. It consists of a video coding layer (VCL) which performs all the classic signal processing tasks and generates bit strings containing coded macroblocks, and a network adaptation layer (NAL) which adapts those bit strings in a network friendly way. The paper describes the use of H.264 coded video over best-effort IP networks, using RTP as the real-time transport protocol. After the description of the environment, the error-resilience tools of H.264 and the draft specification of the RTP payload format are introduced. Next the performance of several possible VCL- and NAL-based error-resilience tools of H.264 are verified in simulations.

This document specifies a payload format for generic Forward Error Correction (FEC) for media data encapsulated in RTP. It is based on the exclusive-or (parity) operation. The payload format described in this document allows end systems to apply protection using various protection lengths and levels, in addition to using various protection group sizes to adapt to different media and channel characteristics. Abstract: We present a network model that allows processing of QoS (quality of service) information about media flows to enable applications to make adaptation decisions. Our model is based around a multi-dimensional spatial representation that allows QoS information describing the flow constructions and QoS parameters – flow-states – to interact with a representation of the network QoS. The model produces reports about the compatibility between the flow-states and the network QoS, indicating which flow-states the network can currently support. The simple nature of the reports allows the application to make decisions, dynamically, on which flow-state it should use. The model is relatively lightweight and scaleable. We demonstrate the use of the model by simulation of a dynamically adaptive audio tool. Our work is ongoing.

This document defines a new security precondition for the Session Description Protocol (SDP) precondition framework described in RFCs 3312 and 4032. A security precondition can be used to delay session establishment or modification until media stream security for a secure media stream has been negotiated successfully.
