Agent-Oriented Software Engineering (AOSE) is an emerging paradigm within industry that offers much potential of the management of the increasing levels of complexity inherent within modern software systems. For this paradigm to gain widespread acceptance, it is vital that we develop comprehensive frameworks that support the development and deployment of agent-oriented applications. This thesis contributes to this through the development of a four-tier development framework entitled the Agent Factory System. This framework combines an agent programming language that is founded upon a formal agent theory of commitment; a run-time environment that delivers a set of services that support the deployment of agent-oriented applications written in this programming language; an integrated development environment that delivers a toolkit that supports the development of these applications; and a development methodology that promotes a structure approach to the use of this toolkit. Fuzzy logic controllers have been applied to a wide range of control problems, but are very difficult to build for situations where the environment changes quickly and there is a lot of uncertainty. This work investigates a new method of creating fuzzy controllers, in the form of reactive agents, for such environments. The framework for this investigation is the RoboCup soccer simulation environment, where the agents are in the form of simulated soccer players evolved to exhibit competent dribble-and-score behaviours. The method proposed uses a messy genetic algorithm to evolve a set of behaviour producing fuzzy rules which define the agents. The results presented indicate that the messy genetic algorithm is well suited to this task, enabling a performance improvement over traditional evolutionary methods by reducing complexity, and that the agents produced perform well in their environment. The best agent evolved is consistently and reliably able to locate the ball, dribble it to the goal and score. 1.

If multi-agent systems are to become widely accepted as a basis for large scale applications, adequate agent concepts will be essential. To address this issue, we show in this paper that agents need to have communication concepts and organization concepts. We argue that instead of the usual approach of starting from a set of intentional states, the intentional structure should be deduced in terms of interaction. To this end, we come up with ontologies related to communication and organization. Unlike most previous work, the presented study shows a new way to combine agent and ontology technologies. Indeed, ontologies have established themselves as a powerful tool to enable knowledge sharing, and a growing number of applications have benefited from the use of ontologies as a means to achieve semantic interoperability among heterogeneous, distributed systems. Ontologies are used in this paper as natural arguments to belief-goal-role agents. We illustrate the concepts by the well known prey/predator example.
