Fast changing, increasingly complex, and diverse computing platforms pose central problems in scientific computing: How to achieve, with reasonable effort, portable optimal performance? We present SPIRAL that considers this problem for the performance-critical domain of linear digital signal processing (DSP) transforms. For a specified transform, SPIRAL automatically generates high performance code that is tuned to the given platform. SPIRAL formulates the tuning as an optimization problem, and exploits the domain-specific mathematical structure of transform algorithms to implement a feedback-driven optimizer. Similar to a human expert, for a specified transform, SPIRAL “intelligently ” generates and explores algorithmic and implementation choices to find the best match to the computer’s microarchitecture. The “intelligence” is provided by search and learning techniques that exploit the structure of the algorithm and implementation space to guide the exploration and optimization. SPIRAL generates high performance code for a broad set of DSP transforms including the discrete Fourier transform, other trigonometric transforms, filter transforms, and discrete wavelet transforms. Experimental results show that the code generated by SPIRAL competes with, and sometimes outperforms, the best available human tuned transform library code.

JPEG2000 is a highly scalable compression standard, allowing access to image representations with a reduced resolution, a reduced quality or confined to a spatial region of interest. As such, it is well placed to play an important role in interactive imaging applications. However, the standard itself stops short of providing guidance or specific mechanisms for exploiting its scalability in such applications. In this paper we describe the JPIK protocol for interactive imaging with JPEG2000. Our results suggest, somewhat surprisingly, that image tiling (dividing into independently compressed sub-images), can be detrimental to effective browsing of large compressed images over low bandwidth connections. 1.

In this paper, we propose an energy efficient JPEG 2000 image transmission system over pointto -point wireless networks. The objective is to minimize the overall processing and transmission energy consumption with the expected end-to-end QoS guarantee, which is achieved by jointly adjusting the source coding schemes, channel coding rates, and transmitter power levels in an optimal way. The advantages of the proposed system lie in three aspects: adaptivity, optimality, and low complexity. Based on the characteristics of the image content, the estimated channel conditions, and the distortion constraint, the proposed low-complexity joint source channel coding and power control algorithm adjusts the coding and transmission strategies adaptively, which can approximate the optimal solution with a tight bound.

In this paper, we analyze the performance of Motion JPEG2000 for wireless applications. This new standard is based on intra-frame wavelet coding. Motion JPEG2000 is offering a number of very compelling advantages when compared to state-of-the-art MPEG-4 video coding. Wavelet coding achieves very high coding efficiency. Furthermore, because frames are intra coded, it is very error-resilient. Finally, Motion JPEG2000 requires low complexity, supports very efficient scalability, and introduces minimal coding delay. In this paper, we propose an analysis of the performance of Motion JPEG2000 and a comparison with MPEG-4 in terms of coding efficiency, error resilience and complexity. We present experimental results which show that Motion JPEG2000 outperforms MPEG-4 for wireless applications.

Abstract—Video encryption has been heavily researched in the recent years. This survey summarizes the latest research results on video encryption with a special focus on applicability and on the most widely-deployed video format H.264 including its scalable extension SVC. The survey intends to give researchers and practitioners an analytic and critical overview of the state-of-the-art of video encryption narrowed down to its joint application with the H.264 standard suite and associated protocols (packag-ing / streaming) and processes (transcoding / watermarking). This paper addresses the efficient adaptation of encrypted scalable video content (H.264/SVC). RTP-based in-network adaptation schemes on a media aware network element (MANE) in an IPTV and VoD scenario are considered. Two basic alternatives to implement encryption and adaptation of H.264/SVC content are investigated: (i) full, format-independent encryption making use of Secure RTP (SRTP); (ii) SVC-specific encryption that leaves the metadata relevant for adaptation (NAL unit headers) unencrypted. The SRTP-based scheme (i) is straightforward to deploy, but requires the MANE to be in the security context of the delivery, i.e., to be a trusted node. For adaptation, the content needs to be decrypted, scaled, and re-encrypted. The SVC-specific approach (ii) enables both full and selective encryption, e.g., of the base layer only. SVC-specific encryption is based on own previous work, which is substantially extended and detailed in this paper. The adaptation MANE can now be an untrusted node; adaptation becomes a low-complexity process, avoiding full decryption and re-encryption of the content. This paper presents the first experimental comparison of these two approaches and evaluates whether multimedia-specific encryption can lead to performance and application benefits. Potential security threats and security properties of the two approaches in the IPTV and VoD scenario are elementarily analyzed. In terms of runtime performance on the MANE our SVC-specific encryption scheme significantly outperforms the SRTP-based approach. SVC-specific encryption is also superior in terms of induced end-to-end delays. The performance can even be improved by selective application of the SVC-specific encryption scheme. The results indicate that efficient adaptation of SVC-encrypted content on low-end, untrusted network devices is feasible.

An encryption approach for H.264/AVC and SVC is proposed. Although the bitstream (format stream) is encrypted with state-of-the-art symmetric ciphers, H.264/AVC and SVC compliance is preserved. Standard compliant encoder/decoder and conventional symmetric ciphers, e.g., in specialized hardware, can still be employed – a significant advantage compared to previous work. The approach is suitable for a wide range of application scenarios.

Across all disciplines that work with image data – from astrophysics to medical research and historic preservation – there is a growing need for efficient ways to browse and inspect large sets of high-resolution images. We present the development of a visualization software for solar physics data based on the JPEG 2000 image compression standard. Our implementation consists of the JHelioviewer client application that enables users to browse petabyte-scale image archives and the JHelioviewer server, which integrates a JPIP server, metadata catalog and an event server. JPEG 2000 offers many useful new features and has the potential to revolutionize the way high-resolution image data are disseminated and analyzed. This is especially relevant for solar physics, a research field in which upcoming space missions will provide more than a terabyte of image data per day. Providing efficient access to such large data volumes at both high spatial and high time resolution is of paramount importance to support scientific discovery.

The new Motion JPEG 2000 standard is providing with some compelling features. It is based on an intra-frame wavelet coding, which makes it very well suited for wireless applications. Indeed, the state-of-the-art wavelet coding scheme achieves very high coding efficiency. In addition, Motion JPEG 2000 is very resilient to transmission errors as frames are coded independently (intra coding). Furthermore, it requires low complexity and introduces minimal coding delay. Finally, it supports very efficient scalability. In this paper, we analyze the performance of Motion JPEG 2000 in errorprone transmission. We compare it to the well-known MPEG-4 video coding scheme, in terms of coding efficiency, error resilience and complexity. We present experimental results which show that Motion JPEG 2000 outperforms MPEG-4 in the presence of transmission errors.

Abstract. In this work an efficient format-compliant encryption approach for regular languages is proposed, block-based cycle-walking. The approach can transparently trade-off security for efficiency and can be adjusted to the desired level of security. The relationship between the encryption of regular languages and the encryption of JPEG2000 bitstreams is established. Block-based cycle-walking for the regular language of JPEG2000 bitstreams is compared to the extensive previous work from the multimedia security community and to the previous work from the cryptographic community, which is analyzed and evaluated.
