However, the possibilities for studying the brain basis of social interaction are still technically limited, and even modern brain imaging studies of social cognition typically monitor just one participant at a time. We present here a method to connect and synchronize two faraway neuromagnetometers. With this method, two participants at two separate sites can interact with each other through a stable real-time audio connection with minimal delay and jitter. The magnetoencephalographic (MEG) and audio recordings of both laboratories are accurately synchronized for joint offline analysis. The concept can be extended to connecting multiple MEG devices around the world. As a proof of concept of the MEG-to-MEG link, we report the results of time-sensitive recordings of cortical evoked responses to sounds delivered at laboratories separated by 5 km. Though individuals differ in the degree to which they are predisposed to trust or act trustworthy, we theorize that trust-based behaviors are universally determined by the calibration of conflicting short- and long-sighted behavior regulation programs, and that these programs are calibrated by emotions experienced personally and interpersonally. In this chapter we review both the main-stream and evolutionary theories of emotions that philosophers, psychologists, and behavioral economists have based their work on and which can inform our understanding of trust-based behavior regulation. The standard paradigm for understanding emotions is based on mapping their positive and negative affect valence. While Valence Models often expect that the experience of positive and negative affect is interdependent (leading to the popular use of bipolar affect scales), a multivariate “recalibrational ” model based on positive, negative, interpersonal, intrapersonal, short-sighted and long-sighted dimensions predicts and recognizes more complex mixed-valence emotional states. We summarize experimental evidence that supports a model of emotionally-calibrated trust regulation and discuss implications for the use of various emotion measures. Finally, in light of these discussions we suggest future directions for the investigation of emotions and trust psychology.

Policies and explicit incentives designed for self-regarding individuals sometimes are less effective or even counterproductive when they diminish altruism, ethical norms and other social preferences. Evidence from 51 experimental studies indicates that this crowding out effect is pervasive, and that crowding in also occurs. A model in which self-regarding and social preferences may be either substitutes or complements is developed and evidence for the mechanisms underlying this non-additivity feature of preferences is provided. The result is a preference-based analogue to the Lucas Critique restricting feasible implementation to allocations that are supportable given the effect of incentives on preferences. Abstract: Experimental studies of social dilemmas have shown that while the existence of a sanctioning institution improves cooperation within groups, it also has a detrimental impact on group earnings in the short-run. Could the introduction of pre-play threats to punish have enough of a beneficial impact on cooperation, while not incurring the cost associated with actual punishment, so that they increase overall welfare? We report an experiment in which players can issue non-binding threats to punish others based on their contribution levels to a public good. After observing others ’ actual contributions, they choose their actual punishment level. We find that threats increase the level of contributions significantly. Efficiency is improved, but only in the long run. However, the possibility of sanctioning differences between threatened and actual punishment leads to lower threats, cooperation and welfare, restoring them to levels equal to or below the

Abstract: Holländer (1990) argued that when non-monetary social approval from peers is sufficiently valuable, it works to promote cooperation. Holländer, however, did not define the characteristics of environments in which high valued approval is likely to occur. This paper provides evidence from a laboratory experiment indicating that people under competition value approval highly, but only when winners earn visible rewards through approval. The evidence implies that a����������������������������������� � motives. Our findings point to new institutions that rely on reward, rather than punishment, to efficiently promote generosity in groups.

Computer science educators have traditionally used algorithm visualization (AV) software to create graphical representations of algorithms for use as visual aids in lectures, or as the basis for interactive labs. Typically, such visualizations are high fidelity in the sense that (a) they depict the target algorithm for arbitrary input, and (b) they tend to have the polished look of textbook figures. In contrast, low fidelity visualizations illustrate the target algorithm for a few, carefully chosen input data sets, and tend to have a sketched, unpolished appearance. Drawing on ethnographic field studies of a junior-level undergraduate algorithms course, we motivate the use of low fidelity AV technology as the basis for an alternative learning paradigm in which students construct their own visualizations, and then present those visualizations to their instructor and peers for feedback and discussion. To explore the design space of low fidelity AV technology, we present SALSA (Spatial ALgorithmic Language for StoryboArding) and ALVIS (ALgorithm VIsualization Storyboarder), a prototype end-user language and system firmly rooted in empirical studies in which students constructed and presented visualizations made out of simple art supplies. Our prototype end-user language and system pioneer a novel technique for programming of visualizations based on spatial relations, and a novel presentation interface that supports human discussions about algorithms by enabling reverse execution and dynamic mark-up and modification. Moreover, the prototype provides an ideal foundation for what we see as the algorithms classroom of the future: the interactive “algorithms studio.” 2 1.
