Abstract The entity-based approach for operations modeling was published for the first time three decades ago. Specifically, the notion of entities as the main subjects of processes and entity life-cycle as a technique for dynamic modeling of operations were introduced independently by K. Robinson in 1979, C. Rosenquist in 1982 and M. Jackson in 1983. This modeling work emerged in clear contrast with static entity-relationship modeling found in the data-base tradition. These three pioneer contributions and other substantial research done at the realm of information engineering, structured systems analysis and social sciences in the 80’s and 90’s have established an important foundation for business operations modeling. On the other hand, Business Process Management (BPM) has continued to receive great attention from practitioners and scholars. Being one of the main hinges between theory and practice of business operations, BPM enjoys contributions from several domains of research such as economics, social sciences, engineering and computing. In spite of its steady growth, the industry side of BPM seems to have evolved somewhat unaware of related progress in the above sister disciplines. Specifically, recent claims on the need to integrate information and activities in process modeling and some rediscoveries of core ideas from entity-based dynamic

Business Intelligence and Analytics (BI&A) is an important topic of IS research with significant implications for practitioners. However, while substantial research exists related to BI&A, it often fails to bridge the gap between normative specifications on BI&A use and improved business outcomes such as the development of competitive advantage. Building on the dynamic capabilities perspective, this paper proposes BI&A as a mechanism for capability monitoring, and describes how it may enable capability dynamization. In light of this view, we highlight five core internal components of BI&A: (1) collection and management of capability practices data, (2) collection and management of environmental data, (3) analysis of environmental data and identification of discontinuities in the environment, (4) identification of capability maladjustments, and (5) producing a request for change. We then discuss the implications of the capability dynamization view on BI&A design, implementation, and management.

ABSTRACT The authors argue that business process management systems (BPMS) are exposed to similar risks of failure as are traditional enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. Change management is a significant critical success factor, and has to be managed well. Given the socio-technical nature of the implementation environment, communication and collaboration are crucially important to the success of change management. The authors provide an example of how collaboration and communication, as part of change management during BPMS implementation, can be achieved in practice, based on the use of Web 2.0 tools and an open source approach.

ABSTRACT Collaborative commerce system (CCS) is an information technology (IT) application built on the foundation of partners' relationship, thus its development decision needs to take the collaborative relationship into consideration. This study aims to understand what factors influence the implementation of collaborative commerce (c-commerce) and to explore how the collaborative relationship affects the engaged parties' CCS decision. Four cases were studied to answer the research questions. The results reveal that the project will be successfully implemented when the degree that internal processes affected by the CCS are acceptable to the engaged parties and their capacities for information technology infrastructure can support the CCS. Moreover, partners with closer relationships tend to use a more complex CCS. This also means more resources, such as time and cost, required to develop the CCS. Finally, the CCS may also facilitate the development of good relationship quality. The research contributes to revealing how the CCS decision is related to collaborative relationship, which provides a new perspective for further research in c-commerce. The findings can also be applied in practice for serving as a reference in making the CCS decision that can promote the quality of collaborative relationship and help the successful implementation of the c-commerce project.
