This paper investigates regional differences within China in the degree of participation in East Asia’s production and distribution networks in machinery industries. By employing customs-based export data, large regional disparity in the pattern of machinery exports as well as a hint of catching-up by late-coming regions is demonstrated. China has been regarded as a “lumpy ” country in the sense of including various comparative advantages due to regional differences in factor prices. The extended fragmentation theory would suggest positive agglomeration effects and differences in service link costs as additional economic elements to explain regional diversity in the trade pattern.

As for China’s stunning export growth, the vital role of foreign-invested firms (=-=Blonigen and Ma, 2007-=-; Koopman et al., 2008) and a heavy dependence on imports of high value-added parts & components for export activities (Lall and Albaladejo, 2004) have been pointed out in the literature. Abstract: This paper assesses the role of intra-sectoral spillovers in total factor productivity across Chinese producers in the chemical industry. We use a rich panel data-set of 10,645 firms observed over the period 2004-2006. We model value added by the firm as a function of capital, skilled and unskilled labor, and total factor productivity broadly defined. The latter is a composite of observable factors such as export market participation, foreign as well as public ownership, and unobservable total factor productivity. Despite the richness of our data-set, it suffers from the lack of time variation in the number of skilled workers as well as in the variable indicating state ownership. We introduce spatial spillovers in total factor productivity by allowing the error term across firms to be spatially interdependent. We extend the Hausman and Taylor (1981) estimator to allow for spatial correlation in the error term. This estimator recaptures the effect of the time-invariantvariables which are wiped out by the fixed effects estimator. We find evidence of positive spillovers across chemical manufacturers and a large and significant detrimental effect of public ownership on total factor productivity.

We analyze the e ect of rising Chinese import competition between 1990 and 2007 on local U.S. labor markets, exploiting cross-market variation in import exposure stemming from initial di erences in industry specialization while instrumenting for imports using changes in Chinese imports by industry to other high-income countries. Rising exposure increases unemployment, lowers labor force participation, and reduces wages in local labor markets. Conservatively, it explains one-quarter of the contemporaneous aggregate decline in U.S. manufacturing employment. Transfer bene ts payments for unemployment, disability, retirement, and healthcare also rise sharply in exposed labor markets. The deadweight loss of nancing these transfers is one to two-thirds as large as U.S. gains from trade with China.

It is argued that this may explain the disappointing results obtained in terms of technological diffusion from processing and foreign activities in China.
