Abstract. Signage plays an important role for wayfinding and navigation to assist blind people accessing unfamiliar environments. In this paper, we present a novel camera-based approach to automatically detect and recognize restroom signage from surrounding environments. Our method first extracts the attended areas which may content signage based on shape detection. Then, Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) is applied to extract local features in the detected attended areas. Finally, signage is detected and recognized as the regions with the SIFT matching scores larger than a threshold. The proposed method can handle multiple signage detection. Experimental results on our collected restroom signage dataset demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed method.

One simple method of recognizing paper currencies has been introduced. It considers different dimensions, areas, Euler numbers, correlations between images as features. It uses Weighted Euclidean Distance for classification. The method uses the case of Saudi Arabian paper currency as a model currency under consideration. It uses fifth series of currency, issued by Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA), as a model currency under consideration. It produces quite satisfactory results in terms of recognition and efficiency.

Now a day the requirement of coins in our day to day transaction at public places such as, shopping malls, railway stations, multiplexes, bus station, and parking places, even in rural areas where nowadays coin telephone system is used, and many more is increasing rapidly. The main motive of designing this efficient and simple machine which will fulfill need of coins for transactions. In olden days the value of coins was much more than what it is today. Thus the system is designed so far that the people will not face problem of coins in public places. This project will provide coins for note of respective value, for this purpose we have developed mechanical coin dispensing model which will accepts the note inside system and checks whether note is fake or real, if it is found that note is real camera takes picture of that note. After that this will find out its value using image processing technique and then according to that value equivalent number of coins are dispensed from dispenser unit. Thus in this manner we are trying to design a robust and efficient machine which will be having a very low production cost as compared to other existing machines. In this system we have developed a MATLAB algorithm for image denomination to detect the value of a particular note, and we have implemented a fake note detection unit using Ultraviolet LED and photodiode terminology.

In economical societies of today, using cash is an inseparable aspect of human life. People use cashes for marketing, services, entertainments, bank operations and so on. This huge amount of contact with cash and the necessity of knowing the monetary value of it caused one of the most challenging problems for visually impaired people. In this paper we propose a mobile phone based approach to identify monetary value of a picture taken from cashes using some image processing and machine vision techniques. While the developed approach is very fast, it can recognize the value of cash by average accuracy of about 95 % and can overcome different challenges like rotation, scaling, collision, illumination changes, perspective, and some others.

Abstract—Choosing clothes with complex patterns and colors is a challenging task for visually impaired people. Automatic cloth-ing pattern recognition is also a challenging research problem due to rotation, scaling, illumination, and especially large intraclass pattern variations. We have developed a camera-based prototype system that recognizes clothing patterns in four categories (plaid, striped, patternless, and irregular) and identifies 11 clothing col-ors. The system integrates a camera, a microphone, a computer, and a Bluetooth earpiece for audio description of clothing patterns and colors. A camera mounted upon a pair of sunglasses is used to capture clothing images. The clothing patterns and colors are described to blind users verbally. This system can be controlled by speech input through microphone. To recognize clothing pat-terns, we propose a novel Radon Signature descriptor and a schema to extract statistical properties from wavelet subbands to capture global features of clothing patterns. They are combined with local features to recognize complex clothing patterns. To evaluate the ef-fectiveness of the proposed approach, we used the CCNY Clothing Pattern dataset. Our approach achieves 92.55 % recognition accu-racy which significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art texture analysis methods on clothing pattern recognition. The prototype was also used by ten visually impaired participants. Most thought such a system would support more independence in their daily life but they also made suggestions for improvements. Index Terms—Assistive system, clothing pattern recognition, global and local image features, texture analysis, visually impaired people. I.

vision, digital cameras, and portable computers make it possible to assist blind individuals by developing camera-based object recognition products. However, motion blur caused by a moving camera limits the real-world application of wayfinding for blind users. In this paper, we propose a new method to detect good quality frames from videos captured by cameras, which are taken by blind users. In our proposed method, both gradient and intensity statistics are extracted from video frames. Then a support vector machine (SVM) based classifier is applied to identify the frames with good quality (Unblurred) from those blurred frames. The Unblurred frames will be further processed to extract essential information for blind wayfinding and navigation such as signage recognition and text extraction. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method is able to robustly handle video motions in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Abstract—Signage plays an important role in wayfinding and navigation to assist blind people accessing unfamiliar environments. In this paper, we present a novel camera-based approach to automatically detect and recognize restroom signage. Our method can handle symbolic signs, text, or both. For symbolic signage, we first employ shape detection to extract the attended areas which contain restroom signage. Then, local features are extracted from the attended areas to search for possible signage based on Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) descriptor. Third, symbolic signage is detected and recognized as the regions with the SIFT matching scores larger than a threshold. For signage with text, a robust text extraction method is developed to detect the text regions, which are then binarized and recognized by off-the-shelf optical character recognition (OCR) software. The recognition results are then transformed into speech for blind users. Experiments show that the proposed method can handle multiple signage detection. Evaluation results on our collected restroom signage dataset demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method. Index Terms — Blind people, Navigation and wayfinding,
