In some recent efforts to reduce the theoretical machinery of transformational syntax, all structures have the underlyingly order "specifierheadcomplement", all movement is leftward, featuredriven, phrasal, and overt. With these developments, the movement of constituents from which material has already been extracted, "remnant movement," is increasingly common. This paper shows that these restricted transformational frameworks remain very expressive in terms of their generative power, and that although the structures they define look complex and require new parsing strategies, their coding complexity is no higher than that of traditional analyses. Furthermore, the derivations of these structures have a simplicity which is revealed by representing them as graphs of matching pairs (feature checking relations), as is done in the "proof nets" of the type logical tradition.

Linguists rely on intuitive conceptions of structure when comparing expressions and languages. In an algebraic presentation of a language, some natural notions of similarity can be rigorously dened (e.g. among elements of a language, equivalence w.r.t. isomorphisms of the language; and among languages, equivalence w.r.t. isomorphisms of symmetry groups), but it turns out that slightly more complex and nonstandard notions are needed to capture the kinds of comparisons linguists want to make. This paper identies some of the important notions of structural similarity, with attention to similarity claims that are prominent in the current linguistic tradition of transformational grammar.

This ESSLLI workshop is devoted to connecting the linguistic use of resource logics and categorial grammar to minimalist grammars and related generative grammars. Minimalist grammars are relatively recent, and although they stem from a long tradition of work in transformational grammar, they are largely informal apart from a few research papers. The study of resource logics, on the other hand, is formal and stems naturally from a long logical tradition. So although there appear to be promising connections between these traditions, there is at this point a rather thin intersection between them. The papers in this workshop are consequently rather diverse, some addressing general similarities between the two traditions, and others concentrating on a thorough study of a particular point. Nevertheless they succeed in convincing us of the continuing interest of studying and developing the relationship between the minimalist program and resource logics.
