Abstract We describe simple greedy algorithms to construct the shortest set of loops that generates either the fundamental group (with a given basepoint) or the first homology group (over any fixed coefficient field) of any oriented 2manifold. In particular, we show that the shortest set of loops that generate the fundamental group of any oriented combinatorial 2manifold, with any given basepoint, can be constructed in O(n log n) time using a straightforward application of Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm. This solves an open problem of Colin de Verdi`ere and Lazarus.

Abstract. We establish that the algorithmic complexity of the minimum spanning tree problem is equal to its decisiontree complexity. Specifically, we present a deterministic algorithm to find a minimum spanning tree of a graph with n vertices and m edges that runs in time O(T ∗ (m, n)) where T ∗ is the minimum number of edgeweight comparisons needed to determine the solution. The algorithm is quite simple and can be implemented on a pointer machine. Although our time bound is optimal, the exact function describing it is not known at present. The current best bounds known for T ∗ are T ∗ (m, n) = �(m) and T ∗ (m, n) = O(m · α(m, n)), where α is a certain natural inverse of Ackermann’s function. Even under the assumption that T ∗ is superlinear, we show that if the input graph is selected from Gn,m, our algorithm runs in linear time with high probability, regardless of n, m, or the permutation of edge weights. The analysis uses a new martingale for Gn,m similar to the edgeexposure martingale for Gn,p.

We present a probabilistic algorithm that, given a connected graph G (represented by adjacency lists) of average degree d, with edge weights in the set {1,...,w}, and given a parameter 0 < ε < 1/2, estimates in time O(dwε−2 log dw ε) the weight of the minimum spanning tree of G with a relative error of at most ε. Note that the running time does not depend on the number of vertices in G. We also prove a nearly matching lower bound of Ω(dwε−2) on the probe and time complexity of any approximation algorithm for MST weight. The essential component of our algorithm is a procedure for estimating in time O(dε−2 log d ε) the number of connected components of an unweighted graph to within an additive error of εn. (This becomes O(ε−2 log 1 ε) for d = O(1).) The time bound is shown to be tight up to within the log d ε factor. Our connectedcomponents algorithm picks O(1/ε2) vertices in the graph and then grows “local spanning trees” whose sizes are specified by a stochastic process. From the local information collected in this way, the algorithm is able to infer, with high confidence, an estimate of the number of connected components. We then show how estimates on the number of components in various subgraphs of G can be used to estimate the weight of its MST. 1

In this work, we extend a common framework for graphbased image segmentation that includes the graph cuts, random walker, and shortest path optimization algorithms. Viewing an image as a weighted graph, these algorithms can be expressed by means of a common energy function with differing choices of a parameter q acting as an exponent on the differences between neighboring nodes. Introducing a new parameter p that fixes a power for the edge weights allows us to also include the optimal spanning forest algorithm for watershed in this same framework. We then propose a new family of segmentation algorithms that fixes p to produce an optimal spanning forest but varies the power q beyond the usual watershed algorithm, which we term power watershed. In particular when q = 2, the power watershed leads to a multilabel, scale and contrast invariant, unique global optimum obtained in practice in quasilinear time. Placing the watershed algorithm in this energy minimization framework also opens new possibilities for using unary terms in traditional watershed segmentation and using watershed to optimize more general models of use in applications beyond image segmentation.

In this paper we present a sublinear time (1+ ɛ)approximation randomized algorithm to estimate the weight of the minimum spanning tree of an npoint metric space. The running time of the algorithm is Õ(n/ɛO(1)). Since the full description of an npoint metric space is of size Θ(n 2),the complexity of our algorithm is sublinear with respect to the input size. Our algorithm is almost optimal as it is not possible to approximate in o(n) time the weight of the minimum spanning tree to within any factor. Furthermore,it has been previously shown that no o(n 2) algorithm exists that returns a spanning tree whose weight is within a constant times the optimum.
