In these lecture notes we describe recent progress in our understanding of attractor mechanism and entropy of extremal black holes based on the entropy function formalism. We also describe precise computation of the microscopic degeneracy of a class of quarter BPS dyons in N = 4 supersymmetric string theories, and compare the statistical entropy of these dyons, expanded in inverse powers of electric and magnetic charges, with a similar expansion of the corresponding black hole entropy. This comparison is extended to include the contribution to the entropy from multicentered black holes as well.

We construct spinning black hole solutions in five dimensions that take into account the mixed gaugegravitational ChernSimons term and its supersymmetric completion. The resulting entropy formula is discussed from several points of view. We include a TaubNUT base space in order to test recent conjectures relating 5D black holes to 4D black holes and the topological string. Our explicit results show that certain charge shifts have to be taken into account for these relations to hold. We also compute corrections to the entropy of black rings in terms of near horizon data.

We find asymptotically flat black hole and string solutions to 5D supergravity in the presence of higher derivative terms. In some cases, including the fundamental heterotic string solution, the higher derivative terms smooth out naked singularities into regular geometries carrying zero entropy. We also compute corrections to the entropy of 5D CalabiYau black holes, and discuss the relation to previous results.

We review recent developments in understanding quantum/string corrections to BPS black holes and strings in fivedimensional supergravity. These objects are solutions to the effective action obtained from Mtheory compactified on a CalabiYau threefold, including the oneloop corrections determined by anomaly cancellation and supersymmetry. We introduce the offshell formulation of this theory obtained through the conformal supergravity method and review the methods for investigating supersymmetric solutions. This leads to quantum/string corrected attractor geometries, as well as asymptotically flat black strings and spinning black holes. With these solutions in hand, we compare our results with analogous studies in fourdimensional stringcorrected supergravity, emphasizing the distinctions between the four and five dimensional theories.
Fundamental superstrings as holograms

The worldsheet of a macroscopic fundamental superstring in the GreenSchwarz lightcone gauge is viewed as a possible boundary hologram of the near horizon region of a small black string. For toroidally compactified strings, the hologram has global symmetries of AdS3 ×S d−1 ×T 8−d (d = 3,..., 8), only some of which extend to local conformal symmetries. We construct the bulk string theory in detail for the particular case of d = 3. The symmetries of the hologram are correctly reproduced from this exact worldsheet description in the bulk. Moreover, the central charge of the boundary Virasoro algebra obtained from the bulk agrees with the Wald entropy of the associated small black holes. This construction provides an exact CFT description of the near horizon region of small black holes both in TypeII and heterotic

For a general three dimensional theory of (super)gravity coupled to arbitrary matter fields with arbitrary set of higher derivative terms in the effective action, we give an algorithm for consistently truncating the theory to a theory of pure (super)gravity with the gravitational sector containing only EinsteinHilbert, cosmological constant and ChernSimons terms. We also outline the procedure for finding the parameters of the truncated theory. As an example we consider dimensional reduction on S 2 of the 5dimensional minimal supergravity with curvature squared terms and obtain the truncated theory without any curvature squared terms. This

The entropy of fivedimensional black rings, which are solutions of U(1) 3 minimal supergravity, is calculated via the entropy function formalism. We find that after dimensional reduction down to fourdimensional spacetime, where the near horizon geometry becomes AdS2 × S 2, the entropy function works very well and gives the correct entropy. We also compute the higher order corrections due to the

We discuss aspects of holography in the AdS3 ×S p near string geometry of a collection of straight fundamental heterotic strings. We use anomalies and symmetries to determine general features of the dual CFT. The symmetries suggest the appearance of nonlinear superconformal algebras, and we show how these arise in the framework of holographic renormalization methods. The nonlinear algebras imply intricate formulas for the central charge, and we show that in the bulk these correspond to an infinite series of quantum gravity corrections. We also makes some comments on the worldsheet σmodel for strings on AdS3 × S 2, which is the holographic dual geometry of parallel heterotic strings in five dimensions.
