While one partner uses RosettaNet for message exchange process and message definition, the other one operates on a proprietary solution based on a combination of WSDL and XML Schema. For this scenario we show the benefits of semantic descriptions which are used within the integration process to enable data and process mediation of services. We illustrate this integration process on the WSMX – a middleware platform conforming to the principles of a Semantic Service Oriented Architecture. 1

RosettaNet is an industry-driven e-business process standard that defines common inter-company public processes and their associated business documents. RosettaNet is based on the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) paradigm and all business documents are expressed in DTD or XML Schema. Our “ontologically-enhanced RosettaNet ” effort translates RosettaNet business documents into a Web ontology language, allowing business reasoning based on RosettaNet message exchanges. This chapter describes this extension to RosettaNet and shows how it can be used in business integrations for better interoperability. The usage of Web ontology languages in RosettaNet collaborations can help accommodate partner heterogeneity in the setup phase and can ease the back-end integration, enabling for example more competition in the purchasing processes. It provides also a building block for a semantic SOA with discovery, selection and composition capabilities.

Although B2B integration is nothing new, interoperability is still a big issue in product data communication. However new technologies are introduced and existing standards evolve to better support all operations to improve the situation. In this paper we introduce a product structure information exchange case from automotive supply chain. Current integration has proprietary XML interface between partners and the integration has constantly errors requiring manual checks for the incoming information and interface have been inflexible to changes in the systems. We review relevant technical and content standards to solve this case. The traditionally used message validation technologies such as DTD or XML Schema lack the expressive power to solve some problems and thus we present a practical case for new semantic web service technologies.

We define adaptive executable choreographies, which allow a more flexible integration of suppliers using RosettaNet and make it easy to introduce more competition to the supply chain. The solution is justified with a scenario-based evaluation and by analysing RosettaNet specifications and their implementations.
