Abstract—Diagnosis can be achieved by building a model of a certain organ under surveillance and comparing it with the real time physiological measurements taken from the patient. This paper deals with the presentation of the benefits of using Data Mining techniques in the computer-aided diagnosis (CAD), focusing on the cancer detection, in order to help doctors to make optimal decisions quickly and accurately. In the field of the noninvasive diagnosis techniques, the endoscopic ultrasound elastography (EUSE) is a recent elasticity imaging technique, allowing characterizing the difference between malignant and benign tumors. Digitalizing and summarizing the main EUSE sample movies features in a vector form concern with the use of the exploratory data analysis (EDA). Neural networks are then trained on the corresponding EUSE sample movies vector input in such a way that these intelligent systems are able to offer a very precise and objective diagnosis, discriminating between benign and malignant tumors. A concrete application of these Data Mining techniques illustrates the suitability and the reliability of this methodology in CAD. Pancreatic cancer is the most deadly of all gastrointestinal malignancies and has a very poor prognosis. Unfortunately, most patients present late in the course of their disease and, at the time of diagnosis, only 10 to 25 % of patients will be eligible for potentially curative resection. Efforts must be oriented towards an early diagnosis and towards reliably identifying patients who can really benefit from major surgery. A suspected pancreatic tumor can be a difficult challenge for the clinician. In the last ten years, we have witnessed notable technological improve-ments in radiological and nuclear imaging. Taking this into account, we will try to delineate the new role of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) in pancreatic tumor imaging and to place EUS in a shareable diagnostic and staging algorithm. To date, the most accurate imaging techniques for pancreatic neoplasms remain contrast-enhanced computed tomography and EUS. EUS has the highest accuracy in detecting small lesions, in assessing tumor size and lymph node involvement, but helical CT must still be the first choice in patients with a suspected pancreatic tumor. However, after this first step, there is a place for EUS as a second diagnostic level in several cases: negative results on CT scan and persistent strong clinical suspicion of pancreatic cancer, doubtful results on CT scans or the need for cytohistological confirmation. In the near future, there will be great opportunities for the development of diagnostic and therapeutic EUS and pancreatic cancer could be the best testing ground.

Background: Using standard diagnostic algorithms it is not always possible to establish the correct phenotype of inflammatory bowel disease which is essential for therapeutical decisions. Endoscopic ultrasound elastography is a new endoscopic procedure which can differentiate the stiffness of normal and pathological tissue by ultrasound. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the role of transrectal ultrasound elastography in distiction between Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Methods: A total 30 Crohn’s disease, 25 ulcerative colitis, and 28 non-inflammatory bowel disease controls were included. Transrectal ultrasound elastography was performed in all patients and controls. In all ulcerative coltis patients and 80 % of Crohn’s disease patients endoscopy was performed to assess disease activity in the rectum. Results: Significant difference in rectal wall thickness and strain ratio was detected between patients with Crohn’s disease and controls (p = 0.0001). CD patients with active disease had higher strain ratio than patients in remission (p = 0.02). In ulcerative colitis group a significant difference in rectal wall thickness was found between controls and patients with active disease (p = 0.03). A significant difference in rectal wall thickness (p = 0.02) and strain ratio (p = 0.0001) was detected between Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis patient group. Crohn’s disease patients with active disease had a significantly higher strain ratio compared to ulcerative colitis patients with active disease

Abstract: Cervical lymph nodes are common sites of metastatic involvement in head and neck cancers. These lymph nodes are superficially located and palpation is a common practice for assessing nodal hardness and staging cancer which is, however, too subjective and with limited accuracy. In this study, the mechanical properties of pig lymph node tissues were investigated using ultrasound elastography and indentation test. Lymph nodes were excised from fresh pork pieces and embedded in an agar-gelatin phantom for strain imaging by elastography. A strain ratio reflecting the strain contrast of lymph node over agar-gelatin phantom was used to assess the elasticity of the lymph node. A cutting device was then custom-designed to slice the phantom into uniform slices for indentation test. The measurements revealed that there were significant differences in both the strain ratio and Young’s modulus between the peripheral and middle regions of the lymph nodes (both p < 0.05); however, the results appeared contradictory. Correlation between the results of the two measurements (modulus ratio vs. inversed strain ratio) showed their association was moderate for both the peripheral and middle regions (R 2 = 0.437 and 0.424 respectively). As the tests were only performed on normal lymph nodes, comparison in stiffness between healthy and abnormal lymph nodes could not be made. Future studies should be conducted to quantify the stiffness change in abnormal lymph nodes.

Abstract: From times immemorial manual palpation served as a source of information on the state of soft tissues and al-lowed detection of various diseases accompanied by changes in tissue elasticity. During the last two decades, the ancient art of palpation gained new life due to numerous emerging elasticity imaging (EI) methods. Areas of applications of EI in medical diagnostics and treatment monitoring are steadily expanding. Elasticity imaging methods are emerging as com-mercial applications, a true testament to the progress and importance of the field. In this paper we present a brief history and theoretical basis of EI, describe various techniques of EI, analyze their advan-tages and limitations, and overview main clinical applications. We present a classification of elasticity measurement and imaging techniques based on the methods used for generating a stress in the tissue (external mechanical force, internal ul-trasound radiation force, or an internal endogenous force), and measurement of the tissue response. The measurement method can be performed using differing physical principles including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound imaging, X-ray imaging, optical and acoustic signals. Until recently, EI was largely a research method used by a few select institutions having the special equipment needed to perform the studies. Since 2005 however, increasing numbers of mainstream manufacturers have added EI to their ultra-
