Some gauge theories with Coulomb branches exhibit singularities in perturbation theory, which are usually resolved by nonperturbative physics. In string theory this corresponds to the resolution of timelike singularities near the core of orientifold planes by effects from F or M theory. We propose a new mechanism for resolving Coulomb branch singularities in three dimensional gauge theories, based on Chern–Simons interactions. This is illustrated in a supersymmetric SU(2) Yang–Mills–Chern–Simons theory. We calculate the one loop corrections to the Coulomb branch of this theory and find a result that interpolates smoothly between the high energy metric (that would exhibit the singularity) and a regular singularityfree low energy result. We suggest possible applications to singularity resolution in string theory and speculate a relationship to a similar phenomenon for the orientifold sixplane in massive IIA supergravity.

Abstract: We discuss properties of interpolating geometries in three dimensional gravity in the presence of a chiral anomaly. This anomaly, which introduces an unbalance between left and right central charges, is protected under RG flows. For this simple reason it is impossible to gap a system with such an anomaly. Our goal is to discuss how holography captures this basic and robust feature. We demonstrate the absence of a mass gap by analysing the linearized spectrum and holographic entanglement entropy of these backgrounds in the context of AdS 3 /CFT 2 .

In this paper we continue our analysis of arXiv:1308.1478 and study in detail the parameter space of three families of doubly spinning black ring solutions: balanced black ring, unbalanced ring and dipolecharged balanced black rings. In all these three families the Extremal Vanishing Horizon (EVH) ring appears in the vanishing limit of the dimensionful parameter of the solution which measures the ring size. We study the near horizon limit of the EVH black rings and for all three cases we find a (pinching orbifold) AdS3 throat with the AdS3 radius ℓ 2 = 8G5M/(3π) whereM is the ring mass and G5 is the 5d Newton constant. We also discuss the near horizon limit of nearEVH black rings and show that the AdS3 factor is replaced with a generic BTZ black hole. We use these results to extend the EVH/CFT correspondence for black rings, a 2d CFT dual to nearEVH black rings.

We study the dynamics of quenched fundamental matter in N = 2 ∗ supersymmetric large N SU(N) Yang–Mills theory at zero temperature. Our tools for this study are probe D7–branes in the holographically dual N = 2 ∗ Pilch–Warner gravitational background. Previous work using D3–brane probes of this geometry has shown that it captures the physics of a special slice of the Coulomb branch moduli space of the gauge theory, where the N constituent D3–branes form a dense one dimensional locus known as the enhançon, located deep in the infrared. Our present work shows how this physics is supplemented by the physics of dynamical flavours, revealed by the D7–branes embeddings we find. The Pilch–Warner background introduces new divergences into the D7–branes free energy, which we are able to remove with a single counterterm. We find a family of D7–brane embeddings in the geometry and discuss their properties. We study the physics of the quark condensate, constituent quark mass, and part of the meson spectrum. Notably, there is a special zero mass embedding that ends on the enhançon, which shows that while the geometry acts repulsively on the D7–branes, it does not do so in a way that produces spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. 1 1

We present new supergravity backgrounds generated by Nc D5branes, wrapping the S 2 of the resolved conifold, in the presence of Nf = 2Nc smeared flavor D5branes. The smearing allows us to take their backreaction on the geometry into account. We discuss the consistency, stability, and supersymmetry of these types of setups. We find near horizon geometries that we expect to be supergravity duals of SQCDlike theories with Nf = 2Nc. From these backgrounds we numerically extract rectangular Wilson loops and beta functions of the dual
