Superiority of poly-alphabetic sequences (PAS) for pulse compression radar over the binary and ternary sequences was established earlier. However, the enlarged alphabets in poly–alphabetic sequences deteriorate the noise and Doppler robustness at higher lengths in high resolution radar (HRR) systems. In this paper, poly-semantic sequences (PSS) with restricted alphabet {+1,-1} are considered and their performance is analyzed in order to achieve superior detection performance for high resolution radar system in presence of high density additive noise and Doppler shift. The poly-semantic sequences are optimized by employing modified Hamming scan algorithm called Hamming backtrack algorithm (HBT) by taking figure of merit as the measure of goodness. The detection capability of poly-semantic sequences is further improved through coincidence detection of the return signal. The simulation results show that the proposed sequences give improved robustness of noise and Doppler shift for HRR target detection compared to conventional pulse compression sequences.

Pulse Compression Sequence is wide utilized inthe field of radar, communication to extend the range resolution. Sequences with good discriminating and merit factor are useful for channel estimation, radar and spread spectrum communication application. Binary sequence has the limitation that the compression ratio is small. Ternary alphabets are suggested as an alternative. The design of ternary codes with good merit factor and discriminating factor can be considered as a nonlinear multivariable mathematical problem which is difficult find a optimal solution. To get the solution for the this problem many global optimization algorithms like Simulated Annealing Algorithm(SA), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Tunneling algorithm (TA) and particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) could be used.Further a set of pulse compression sequence are required for spread spectrum and CDMA application such that the individual autocorrelation function of each sequence is like an impulse and the cross correlation between any two sequences in the set must be zero for all lags unfortunately. In this paper, it is proposed to use a new method of algorithm for the design of best ternary codes sets for various lengths by using Modified Simulated Annealing Algorithm. The general features such as global convergence and robustness of the statistical algorithm are revealed.

The pulse compression codes with low autocorrelation sidelobe levels and high Merit Factor (MF) are useful in radar, channel estimation and spread spectrum communication applications. One of the main criteria of good pulse compression is MF. A sequence with high MF can be considered as best sequence. In this paper an efficient VLSI architecture is proposed for generation and implementation of the ternary sequences using Finite State Machines [FSM]. This VLSI architecture is implemented on the FPGA as it provides the flexibility of reconfigurability and reprogramability The ternary pulse compression sequence elements are +1,0,-1.Ternary sequences have superior MF compared to binary sequences but cannot be transmitted with existing technology. For transmission of ternary sequences, they must be coded into binary sequences. The binary sequence is chosen such that each of these bi-alphabetic interpretations leads to high MF. At the received section again the received sequence has to be decoded from binary to ternary. The VLSI architecture for implementing ternary codes has been authored in VHDL and the synthesis was done with Xilinx XST, ISE Foundation 12.1i has been used for performing mapping, placing and routing.
