Models of human work are well recognized means for representing multiple elements of an organization in a mutually tuned form. However, humans and systems tend to use different forms of representation when expressing their knowledge. Most of the widespread modelling approaches focus on a system designer's or software view rather than on intuitive and comprehensive (re)presentations of mental models of users.

Effective and successful support of collaborative process design in a distributed environment is largely dependent on the mutual intelligibility of processes for the involved parties. This requires an ICT supported modelling framework that captures information provided by stakeholders and presents it in an accurate way to the other involved parties. We introduce a novel, distributed approach for process modelling, which allows to build abstract models of processes, business rules and constraints. The focus of this approach lays on enabling the creation of simple descriptions of enterprise internal processes and supporting refinement when necessary. This paper presents the underlying novel modelling notation and a list of identified requirements and research questions for a framework that ensures intelligibility and allows to interconnect the individual models.

Digital Montessori-inspired Manipulatives (MiMs), so far have been used effectively for knowledge transfer in elementary educational settings. For work modelling and task-based interactive systems design we propose a modelling concept and usage scenario that should help to increase effectiveness in organization and technology development. The Tangible Task Modelling Demonstrator (TTMD) facilitates the representation and development of work and task models by means of MiMs. Using the TTMD users can directly grasp and manipulate work tasks. As a result, the cognitive load for modelling and (re-)arranging elements of work spaces can be reduced. 1

Nowadays, business supply chains for the production of complex products or services are likely to involve a number of autonomous organizations. The competitive market requires that these supply chains are highly agile, effective and efficient. Agility and effectiveness are obtained by forming highly dynamic virtual enterprises within supplier networks. We call these instant virtual enterprises (IVEs). The required efficiency of creating and operating IVEs can only be obtained by automated support for design, setup and enactment of business processes within these IVEs. This process support involves the dynamic composition of local processes of network members into global processes at the IVE level. This functionality goes significantly beyond traditional approaches for interorganizational workflow management. The approach, architecture and technology required for this dynamic network process management in IVEs are outlined in this paper. We show how the developed approach is applied in the automotive industry in the context of the CrossWork IST project.
