We thank Randy Katz and Eric Anderson for their detailed readings of early drafts of this paper, and David Culler for his ideas on TACC's potential as a model for cluster programming. Ken Lutz and Eric Fraser configured and administered the test network on which the TranSend scaling experiments were performed. Cliff Frost of the UC Berkeley Data Communications and Networks Services group allowed us to collect traces on the Berkeley dialup IP network and has worked with us to deploy and promote TranSend within Berkeley. Undergraduate researchers Anthony Polito, Benjamin Ling, and Andrew Huang implemented various parts of TranSend's user profile database and user interface. Content delivery over the Internet needs to address both the multimedia nature of the content and the capabilities of the diverse client platforms the content is being delivered to. We present a system that adapts multimedia Web documents to optimally match the capabilities of the client device requesting it. This system has two key components: (1) A representation scheme called the InfoPyramid that provides a multi-modal, multi-resolution representation hierarchy for multimedia. (2) A customizer that selects the best content representation to meet the client capabilities while delivering the most value. We model the selection process as a resource allocation problem in a generalized rate-distortion framework. In this framework, we address the issue of both multiple media types in a Web document and multiple resource types at the client. In this thesis, we present the analysis of a large client-side web trace gathered from the Home IP service at the University of California at Berkeley. Specifically, we demonstrate the heterogeneity of web clients, the existence of a strong and very predictable diurnal cycle in the clients' web activity, the burstiness of clients' requests at small time scales (but not large time scales, implying a lack of self-similarity), the presence of locality of reference in the clients' requests that is a strong function of the client population size, and the high latency that services encounter when delivering data to clients, implying that services will need to maintain a very large number of simultaneously active requests. Mobile devices have already been widely used to access the Web. However, because most available web pages are designed for desktop PC in mind, it is inconvenient to browse these large web pages on a mobile device with a small screen. In this paper, we propose a new browsing convention to facilitate navigation and reading on a small-form-factor device. A web page is organized into a two level hierarchy with a thumbnail representation at the top level for providing a global view and index to a set of subpages at the bottom level for detail information. A page adaptation technique is also developed to analyze the structure of an existing web page and split it into small and logically related units that fit into the screen of a mobile device. For a web page not suitable for splitting, auto-positioning or scrolling-by-block is used to assist the browsing as an alterative. Our experimental results show that our proposed browsing convention and developed page adaptation scheme greatly improve the user’s browsing experiences on a device with a small display.

This article summarizes the results of the BARWAN project, which focused on enabling truly useful mobile networking across an extremely wide variety of real-world networks and mobile devices. We present the overall architecture, summarize key results, and discuss four broad lessons learned along the way. The architecture enables seamless roaming in a single logical overlay network composed of many heterogeneous (mostly wireless) physical networks, and provides significantly better TCP performance for these networks. It also provides complex scalable and highly available services to enable powerful capabilities across a very wide range of mobile devices, and mechanisms for automated discovery and configuration of localized services. Four broad themes arose from the project: 1) the power of dynamic adaptation as a generic solution to heterogeneity, 2) the importance of cross-layer information, such as the exploitation of TCP semantics in the link layer, 3) the use of agents in the infrastructure to enable new abilities and to hide new problems from legacy servers and protocol stacks, and 4) the importance of soft state for such agents for simplicity, ease of fault recovery, and scalability.

We describe one such application, Top Gun Wingman, a graphical, split Web browser for the Palm Pilot PDA that is currently in use by more than 11,000 users around the world. Our discussion focuses on the design philosophy, implementation, performance, and lessons learned from our experience with the Wingman client and the middleware proxy that supports it.

In order to display web pages designed for desktop-sized monitors, some small-screen web browsers provide singlecolumn or thumbnail views. Both have limitations. Singlecolumn views affect page layouts and require users to scroll significantly more. Thumbnail views tend to reduce contained text beyond readability, so differentiating visually similar areas requires users to zoom. In this paper, we present Summary Thumbnails—thumbnail views enhanced with readable text fragments. Summary Thumbnails help users identify viewed material and distinguish between visually similar areas. In our user study, participants located content in web pages about 41 % faster and with 71% lower error rates when using the Summary Thumbnail interface than when using the Single-Column interface, and zoomed 59 % less than when using the Thumbnail interface. We demonstrate a new browsing technique for devices with small displays such as PDAs or cellular phones. We concentrate on end-game browsing, where the user is close to or on the target page. We make browsing more efficient and easier by Accordion Summarization. In this technique the Web page is first represented as a short summary. The user can then drill down to discover relevant parts of the page. If desired, keywords can be highlighted and exposed automatically. We discuss our techniques, architecture, interface facilities, and the result of user evaluations. We measured a 57 % improvement in browsing speed and 75% reduction in input effort.
