Research on ontology is becoming increasingly widespread in the computer science community, and its importance is being recognized in a multiplicity of research fields and application areas, including knowledge engineering, database design and integration, information retrieval and extraction. We shall use the generic term information systems, in its broadest sense, to collectively refer to these application perspectives. We argue in this paper that so-called ontologies present their own methodological and architectural peculiarities: on the methodological side, their main peculiarity is the adoption of a highly interdisciplinary approach, while on the architectural side the most interesting aspect is the centrality of the role they can play in an information system, leading to the perspective of ontology-driven information systems.

We review the use on ontologies for the integration of heterogeneous information sources. Based on an in-depth evaluation of existing approaches to this problem we discuss how ontologies are used to support the integration task. We evaluate and compare the languages used to represent the ontologies and the use of mappings between ontologies as well as to connect ontologies with information sources. We also enquire into ontology engineering methods and tools used to develop ontologies for information integration. Based on the results of our analysis we summarize the state-of-the-art in ontology-based information integration and name areas of further research activities.

OilEd, is an ontology editor that has an easy to use fi'ame interface, yet at the same time allows users to exploit the full power of an expressive web ontology language (OIL). OilEd uses reasoning to support ontology design, facilitating the development of ontologies that are both more detailed and more accurate.

For 1 ontologies to be cost-effectively deployed, we require a clear understanding of the various ways that ontologies are being used today. To achieve this end, we present a framework for understanding and classifying ontology applications. We identify four main categories of ontology applications: 1) neutral authoring, 2) ontology as specification, 3) common access to information, and 4) ontology-based search. In each category, we identify specific ontology application scenarios. For each, we indicate their intended purpose, the role of the ontology, the supporting technologies, who the principal actors are and what they do. We illuminate the similarities and differences between scenarios. We draw on work from other communities, such as software developers and standards organizations. Systems and infrastructures are currently being developed to support Web services. The main idea is to encapsulate an organization’s functionality within an appropriate interface and advertise it as Web services. While in some cases Web services may be utilized in an isolated form, it is normal to expect Web services to be integrated as part of workflow processes. The composition of workflow processes that model e-service applications differs from the design of traditional workflows, in terms of the number of tasks (Web services) available to the composition process, in their heterogeneity, and in their autonomy. Therefore, two problems need to be solved: how to efficiently discover Web services – based on functional and operational requirements – and how to facilitate the interoperability of heterogeneous Web services. In this paper, we present a solution within the context of the emerging Semantic Web, that includes use of ontologies to overcome some of the problems. We start by illustrating the steps involved in the composition of a workflow. Two of these steps are the discovery of Web services and their posterior integration into a workflow. To assist designers with those two steps, we have devised an algorithm to simultaneously discover Web services and resolve heterogeneity among their interfaces and the workflow host. Finally, we describe a prototype that has been implemented to illustrate how discovery and interoperability functions are achieved.

Technology for knowledge management has so far focused on the management of knowledge containers. We present an approach that is oriented towards managing knowledge contents instead by identifying knowledge items at various levels of formality. This is done by providing various types of meta data that are tied to ontologies for conceptual interlinkage. Knowledge items are embedded into knowledge processes, which are supported by a suite of ontology-based tools. In order to handle this sort of rich knowledge process, we introduce a meta process that puts special emphasis on constructing and maintaining the ontology when introducing knowledge management systems. In order to elucidate our approach, we describe a case study about the building of CHAR, the Corporate History AnalyzeR.

Ontologies are set to play a key role in the "Semantic Web" by providing a source of shared and precisely defined terms that can be used in descriptions of web resources. Reasoning over such descriptions will be essential if web resources are to be more accessible to automated processes. SHOQ(D) is an expressive description logic equipped with named individuals and concrete datatypes which has almost exactly the same expressive power as the latest web ontology languages (e.g., OIL and DAML). We present sound and complete reasoning services for this logic. 1
