We obtain a large class of smooth Lorentzian p-brane wormholes in supergravities in various dimensions. They connect two asymptotically flat spacetimes. In cases where there is no dilaton involved in the solution, the wormhole can connect an AdSn × Sm in one asymptotic region to a flat spacetime in the other. We obtain explicit examples for (n,m) = (4,7),(7,4),(5,5),(3, 3), (3,2). These geometries correspond to field theories with UV conformal fixed points, and they undergo decompactification in the IR region. In the Asymptotically AdS solutions in supergravities play an important rôle in the AdS/CFT correspondence [1–3], since they provide supergravity duals to quantum field theories with conformal fixed points in the UV region. We consider static non-extremal charged black hole solutions in the context of N = 2 gauged supergravity theories in five dimensions, and we show that they satisfy first-order flow equations. Then we analyze the motion of the dual brane in these black hole backgrounds. We express the entropy in terms of a Cardy-Verlinde-type formula, and we show that the equations describing the FRW cosmology on the brane have a form that is similar to the equations for the entropy and for the Casimir energy on the brane. We study ows on the scalar manifold of N = 8 gauged supergravity in ve dimensions which are dual to certain mass deformations of N = 4 super Yang{Mills theory. In particular, we consider a perturbation of the gauge theory by a mass term for the adjoint hyper-multiplet, giving rise to an N = 2 theory. The exact solution of the 5-dim gauged supergravity equations of motion is found and the metric is uplifted to a ten-dimensional background of type-IIB supergravity. Using these geometric data and the AdS/CFT correspondence we analyze the spectra of certain operators as well as Wilson loops on the dual gauge theory side. The physical ows are parametrized by a single non-positive constant and describe part of the Coulomb branch of the N = 2 theory at strong coupling. Abstract: One of the powerful techniques to analyze the 5 dimensional Super Yang Mills theory with a massive hypermultiplet (N = 1 ∗ ) is provided by the AdS/CFT correspondence. It predicts that, for certain special values of the hypermultiplet mass, this theory develops nonperturbative branches of the moduli space as well as new light degrees of freedom. We use the higher dimensional generalization of the matrix model/gauge theory correspondence and recover all the prediction of the supergravity analysis. We construct the map between the four dimensional holomorphic superpotential and the five dimensional action and explicitly show that the superpotential is flat along the nonperturbative branches. This is the first instance in which the Dijkgraaf-Vafa method is used to analyze intrinsically higher dimensional phenomena.

Abstract: Various holographic approaches to QCD in five dimensions are explored using input both from the putative non-critical string theory as well as QCD. It is argued that a gravity theory in five dimensions coupled to a dilaton and an axion may capture the important qualitative features of pure QCD. A part of the higher α ′-corrections are resummed into a dilaton potential. The potential is shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with the exact β-function of QCD, and its knowledge determines the full structure of the vacuum solution. The geometry near the UV boundary is that of AdS5 with logarithmic corrections reflecting the asymptotic freedom of QCD. We find that all relevant confining backgrounds have an IR singularity of the “good ” kind that allows unambiguous spectrum computations. Near the singularity the ’t Hooft coupling is driven to infinity. Asymptotically linear glueball masses can also be achieved. We show that the recent string theory embedding of a spacetime with nonrelativistic Schrödinger symmetry can be generalised to a twenty one dimensional family of solutions with that symmetry. Our solutions include IIB backgrounds with no three form flux turned on, and arise as near horizon limits of branewave spacetimes. We show that there is a hypersurface in the space of these theories where an instability appears in the gravitational description, indicating a phase transition in the nonrelativistic field theory dual. We also present simple embeddings of duals for nonrelativistic critical points where the dynamical critical exponent can take many values z ̸ = 2.1 Background In recent studies of the (strongly coupled) quark-gluon plasma, just above the QCD deconfinement temperature, the AdS/CFT correspondence [1] is finally starting to deliver qualitative and even quantitative results of experimental relevance that are difficult to obtain by more traditional theoretical methods (for overviews see for instance [2, 3, 4]). The best understood versions of the AdS/CFT correspondence describe a duality between a conformally invariant gauge theory and string theory in an asymptotically Anti-de
