We find a general class of ppwave solutions of type IIB string theory such that the light cone gauge worldsheet lagrangian is that of an interacting massive field theory. When the light cone Lagrangian has (2,2) supersymmetry we can find backgrounds that lead to arbitrary superpotentials on the worldsheet. We consider situations with both flat and curved transverse spaces. We describe in some detail the background giving rise to the N = 2 sine Gordon theory on the worldsheet. Massive mirror symmetry relates it to the deformed CP 1 model (or sausage model) which seems to elude a purely supergravity target space interpretation. 1

We consider open strings ending on a D5brane in the ppwave background, which is realized in the Penrose limit of AdS5×S 5 with an AdS4×S 2 brane. We obtain explicit realizations of holographic renormalization group (RG) flows from Mtheory, from E 2,1 × Spin(7) at UV to AdS4 × ˜ S 7 (squashed S 7) at IR, from E 2,1 × CY 4 at UV to AdS4 ×Q 1,1,1 at IR, and from E 2,1 ×HK (hyperKahler) at UV to AdS4 ×N 0,1,0 at IR. The dual type IIA string theory configurations correspond to D2D6 brane systems where D6branes wrap supersymmetric fourcycles. We also study the Penrose limits and obtain the ppwave backgrounds for the above configurations. Besides, we study some examples of Since Mtheory compactifications on manifolds of special holonomy preserve a fraction of the original supercharges in flat elevendimensional spacetime, it has become a fruitful arena to explore the dynamical aspects of minimally supersymmetric gauge theories. We study the modular invariance of strings on ppwaves with RRflux. We explicitly show that the oneloop partition functions of the maximally supersymmetric ppwaves and their orbifolds can be modular invariant in spite of the mass terms in the lightcone gauge. From this viewpoint, we also determine the spectrum of type 0B theory on ppwave and discuss its gauge theory dual. Furthermore, we investigate the spectrum of a nonsupersymmetric orbifold and point out its supersymmetry enhancement in the Penrose limit. 1

We use recently proposed translations isometries of ppwaves to construct D4 and D3 brane solutions, using Tduality transformations, in exactly solvable ppwave background originating from AdS3 × S 3 geometry. A unique property of the new brane solutions is the breaking of SO(10−p−1) symmetry in the transverse direction of the branes due to the presence of constant NS−NS and R−R background fluxes. We verify that the our ‘localized ’ solutions satisfy the field equations and explicitly present the corresponding Killing spinors. We also show the connection of our results to certain M5branes in ppwave geometry.

In this paper we show how one can obtain very simply the spectra of the PPwave limits of Mtheory over AdS 7(4) ×S 4(7) spaces and IIB superstring theory over AdS5 ×S 5 from the oscillator construction of the KaluzaKlein spectra of these theories over the corresponding spaces. The PPwave symmetry superalgebras are obtained by taking the number P of “colors ” of oscillators to be large (infinite). In this large P limit, the symmetry superalgebra osp(8 ∗ 4) of AdS7 × S 4 and the symmetry superalgebra osp(84, R) of AdS4 × S 7 lead to isomorphic PPwave algebras, which is su(42)ⓈH 18,16, while the symmetry superalgebra su(2,24) of AdS5 × S 5 leads to [psu(22) ⊕ psu(22) ⊕ u(1)] ⓈH 16,16 as its PPwave algebra [H m,n denoting a superHeisenberg algebra with m bosonic and n fermionic generators]. The zero mode spectra of Mtheory or IIB superstring theory in the PPwave limit corresponds simply to the unitary positive energy representations of these algebras whose lowest weight vector is the Fock vacuum of all the oscillators. General positive energy supermultiplets including those corresponding to higher modes can similarly be constructed by the oscillator method.

Two families of supersymmetric configurations are considered. One is the 1/4 supersymmetric D1D5 system with angular momentum, and the other is a family of ppwaves of type IIB string theory with some supersymmetry. In the first part of the thesis some configurations of the D1D5 system are examined which give conical singularities in AdS3 as their near horizon limit. It is shown that they can be made nonsingular by adding angular momentum to the brane system. The smooth asymptotically flat solutions constructed this way are used to obtain global AdS3 as the near horizon geometry. Using the relation of the D1D5 system to the oscillating string, a large family of supergravity solutions is constructed which describe BPS excitations on AdS3 × S3 with angular momentum on S3. These solutions take into account the full backreaction on the metric, and can be viewed as KaluzaKlein monopole “supertubes”, which are completely nonsingular geometries. The different chiral primaries of the dual CFT are identified with these different supergravity solutions. This part is adapted from the papers [1], [2]. In its second part, a general class of supersymmetric ppwave solutions of type IIB string theory is constructed, such that the superstring worldsheet action in light cone gauge is that of an interacting massive field theory. It is shown that when the light cone Lagrangian has (2,2) supersymmetry, one can find backgrounds that lead to arbitrary superpotentials on the worldsheet. Both flat and curved transverse spaces are considered. In particular, the background giving rise to the N = 2 sine Gordon theory on the worldsheet is analyzed.
