We propose a new abstract definition of equilibrium in the spirit of competitive equilibrium: a profile of alternatives and a public ordering (expressing prestige, price or a social norm), such that each agent prefers his assigned alternative to all lower-ranked ones. The equilibrium operates in an abstract setting built upon a concept of convexity borrowed from Convex Geometry. We apply the concept to a variety of convex economies and relate it to Pareto optimality. The "magic " of linear equilibrium prices is put into perspective by establishing an analogy between linear functions in the standard convexity and "primitive orderings " in the abstract convexity.

Yet such perceptions are based on stereotypes rather than theoretically informed empirical research. Drawing on the migration and visa databases from the Determinants of International Migration – DEMIG project and the Global Bilateral Migration Database (GBMD), this paper explores the evolution and drivers of migration within, towards and from Africa in the post-colonial period. Contradicting common ideas of Africa as a ‘continent on the

The papers in this series: analyse migration as part of broader global change contribute to new theoretical approaches advance understanding of the multi-level forces driving migration This paper combines insights from the New Economics of Labour Migration and Sen’s capability approach to analyse how financial constraints and social policy in the sending country influence migration decisions of households. It particularly looks into social protection (cash transfers) and quasi-public goods (health and education infrastructure) in Indonesia. The paper analyses the impact of the 2005 unconditional cash transfers scheme in Indonesia on households ’ migration decisions. It combines internal and international migration in an integrated empirical analysis. Household-level data from the
