In this article, we argue that consumer behavior is often strongly influenced by subtle environ-mental cues. Using grocery shopping as an example (or a “leitmotif, ” if you wish), we first ar-gue that the traditional perspective on consumer choice based on conscious information pro-cessing leaves much variance to be explained. Instead, we propose that many choices are made unconsciously and are strongly affected by the environment. Our argument is based on research on the perception–behavior link and on automatic goal pursuit. Picture yourself in a supermarket. You are navigating through aisles, around people, occasionally dropping something in your cart. After about 20 min, you find yourself at the counter with 26 different items in your cart, among them a tuna pizza with anchovies, as well as bananas, peanut butter, detergent, and Ben & Jerry’s New York Super Fudge Chunk ® ice cream. Now,howdidallof these thingsendup there?Sure, youpicked them yourself, but why? If you would be probed to explain, for all 26 items individually, why you chose them, you would

Predicting soccer matches: A reassessment of the benefit of unconscious thinking
"... We evaluate Dijksterhuis, Bos, van der Leij, & van Baaren (2009), Psychological Science, on the benefit of unconscious thinking in predicting the outcomes of soccer matches. We conclude that the evidence that unconscious thinking helps experts to make better predictions is tenuous both from the ..."

Discussion and Reply Comment on “Permeability prediction from MICP and NMR data using an electrokinetic approach”
"... Glover et al. 2006 present a supposedly new permeability model that they call the RGPZ model. This model relates permeability to the mean grain size of a porous medium and the electric formation factor. They compare the prediction of this model with the predic-tions made with four other models—the ..."

Does unconscious thought outperform conscious thought on complex decisions? A further examination
- Judgment and Decision Making
, 2009
"... Two experiments examined the benefits of unconscious thought on complex decisions (Dijksterhuis, 2004). Experiment 1 attempted to replicate and extend past research by examining the effect of providing reasons prior to rating the options. Results indicated no significant differences between the cond ..."

the conditions. Experiment 2 attempted to replicate the findings of Dijksterhuis, Bos, Nordgren, and van Baaren (2006) and determine if a memory aid could overcome the limitations of conscious thought on complex tasks. Results revealed that a memory aid improved decisions compared to the conscious thought
Examining the Relationships between Empathy, Mood, and Facial
"... ABSTRACT Facial mimicry is an automatic process that may occur as we see facial expression and respond congruently with a similar expression (van Baaren, Fockenberg, Holland, Janssen, & van Knippenberg, 2006). Empathy is the capacity to take on and understand another’s emotions (Hojat et al., 2 ..."
