Lambek Calculus for Transformational Grammar

by Thomas L. Cornell, Universität Tübingen
"... In this paper we present a formalization of some ideas from Chomsky (1995) in the framework of multimodal type logical grammar (e.g., Moortgat (1996) and refs). This project is in many respects rather straightforward, but makes use of aspects of the type logical machinery which are generally not use ..."

On the irrelevance of transformational grammar to second language pedagogy

by John T Lamendella - Language Learning , 1969
"... Many scholars view transformational grammar as an attempt to represent the structure of linguistic knowledge in the mind and seek to apply transformational descriptions of languages to the development of second language teaching materials. It will be claimed in this paper that it is a mistake to lo ..."

Transformation Grammar for Housing Rehabilitation From a specific to a general grammar

by Sara Eloy
"... Abstract. This article focuses on the use of both shape grammar and space syntax as tools to identify and encode the principles and rules behind the adaptation of existing houses to new requirements. The idea is to use such rules as part of a transformation grammar-based methodology for the rehabili ..."

Although Minimalism is often referred to as a program, it is now sufficiently developed to be an indisputable part of the discussion in theoretical syntax and even the subject of introductory manuals. The four books reviewed in this article each reflect the place Minimalism now holds in linguistic theory. They can be divided into two groups, depending on the intended readership. Radford’s and Ouhalla’s volumes are introductions to theoretical syntax and can be read with no linguistic background. The two other books are much more technical and address more advanced readers. Each group can be further subdivided according to whether Minimalism is presented from an historical perspective or discussed ‘in its own right’. I Radford (1997) and Ouhalla (1999) I will start by reviewing the two introductory textbooks to syntactic theory. Radford’s volume (and its abridged version, to which I

Transition Network Grammars for Natural Language Analysis

by W. A. Woods - COMPUTATIONAL LINGUISTICS, D.G. BOBROW, EDITOR , 1970
"... The use of augmented transition network grammars for the analysis of natural language sentences is described. Structure-building actions associated with the arcs of the grammar network allow for the reordering, restructuring, and copying of constituents necessary to produce deep-structure representa ..."

Transforming grammar checking technology into a learning environment for second language writing

by Ola Knutsson - In Proceedings of the HLT-NAACL 03 Workshop on Building Educational Applications Using Natural Language Processing , 2003
"... This paper focuses on the transformation of grammar checking technology into a learning environment for second language writing. Our starting point is a grammar checker for Swedish, called Granska. Two studies have been conducted aimed at exploring the use of computer support for writing in the cont ..."

Automatic Grammar Induction and Parsing Free Text: A Transformation-Based Approach

by Eric Brill - IN PROCEEDINGS OF THE 31ST ANNUAL MEETING OF THE ASSOCIATION FOR COMPUTATIONAL LINGUISTICS , 1993
"... In this paper we describe a new technique for parsing free text: a transformational grammar is automatically learned that is capable of accurately parsing text into binary-branching syntactic trees with nonterminals unlabelled. The algorithm works by beginning in a very naive state of knowledge abo ..."
