The College of Education at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) established collaborative partnership agreements with nine major school districts in Iowa where UNI student teachers were placed. One collaborative project connected the campus coordinator with the nine off-campus sites through the campus computer network (Caucus). In the 1993-94 school year the transition to Internet is being made. This paper describes: (1) how the UNI computer network (Cauls) was developed and extended; (2) projects that caused practitioners to become active partners in the UNI Teacher Education program; (3) projects such as newsletters, establishment of mentor programs for student teachers, and the organization of seminars and local educational programs that were organized through the network; (4) practitioner's use of the network to serve on University committees, to help plan conferences in

Phoneme Recognition as a Hearing Aid in Telephone Communication

by Mathias Johansson , 2002
"... This thesis investigates the idea of using phoneme recognition as a telephone communication aid aimed at heating-impaired people. A laboratory ASR system has been developed with which on-line trials (user studies) have been conducted in order to investigate and evaluate the idea of using state-of-th ..."

Reality Mining: Sensing Complex Social Systems

by Nathan Eagle, Alex Pentland - J. OF PERSONAL AND UBIQUITOUS COMPUTING , 2005
"... We introduce a system for sensing complex social systems with data collected from one hundred mobile phones over the course of six months. We demonstrate the ability to use standard Bluetooth-enabled mobile telephones to measure information access and use in different contexts, recognize social patt ..."

A summary table displays the results of the data analysis for each of the libraries and each of the categories: (1) availability of core collections; (2) specific requests; (3) reference queries; (4) special telephone lines; (5) advertisement of services; (6) a librarian

Wrapper Induction for Information Extraction

The Active Badge Location System

by Roy Want, Veronica Falcao, Jon Gibbons - ACM Transactions on Information Systems , 1992
"... cation is the `pager system'. In order to locate a person a signal is sent out by a central facility that addresses a particular receiver unit (beeper) and produces an audible signal. In addition, it may display a number to which the called-party should phone back (some systems allow a vocal me ..."

message to be conveyed about the call-back number). It is then up to the recipient to use the conventional telephone system to call-back confirming the signal and determine the required action. Although useful in practice there are still circumstances where it is not ideal. For instance, if the called

Ptolemy: A Framework for Simulating and Prototyping Heterogeneous Systems

by Joseph Buck, Soonhoi Ha, Edward A. Lee, David G. Messerschmitt , 1992
"... Ptolemy is an environment for simulation and prototyping of heterogeneous systems. It uses modern object-oriented software technology (C++) to model each subsystem in a natural and efficient manner, and to integrate these subsystems into a whole. Ptolemy encompasses practically all aspects of design ..."

of designing signal processing and communications systems, ranging from algorithms and communication strategies, simulation, hardware and software design, parallel computing, and generating real-time prototypes. To accommodate this breadth, Ptolemy must support a plethora of widely-differing design styles

New Directions in Cryptography

by Whitfield Diffie, Martin E. Hellman , 1976
"... Two kinds of contemporary developments in cryptography are examined. Widening applications of teleprocessing have given rise to a need for new types of cryptographic systems, which minimize the need for secure key distribution channels and supply the equivalent of a written signature. This paper sug ..."
