Travel and tourism are considered the most popular form of individual enjoyment in the countries of origin of the visitors. Despite this fact, the consequences of the steady growing tourism are often criticised by the citizens of these same countries. The ephemeral nature of the tourism phenomenon is a cause of insecurity; moreover, it is often subject to misleading, emotional and even ideologically-inspired interpretations. As for the impact of tourism on local cultures and populations, this remains a highly controversial subject. For a better understanding of tourism we need first to clarify a few basic concepts and processes. To begin with, it would help to know just why
