Persuasion in practical argument using value-based argumentation frameworks
- Journal of Logic and Computation
, 2003
"... In many cases of disagreement, particularly in situations involving practical reasoning, it is impossible to demonstrate conclusively that either party is wrong. The role of argument in such cases is to persuade rather than to prove, demonstrate or refute. Following Perelman, we argue that persuasio ..."

that persuasion in such cases relies on a recognition that the strength of an argument depends on the social values that it advances, and that whether the attack of one argument on another succeeds depends on the comparative strength of the values advanced by the arguments concerned. To model this we extend
Persuasive Prediction of Concurrency Access Anomalies
"... Predictive analysis is a powerful technique that exposes concurrency bugs in un-exercised program executions. However, current predictive analysis approaches lack the persuasiveness property as they offer little assistance in helping programmers fully understand the execution history that triggers t ..."

Public debate functions as a forum for both expressing and forming opinions, an important aspect of public life. We present results for automatically classifying posts in online debate as to the position, or STANCE that the speaker takes on an issue, such as Pro or Con. We show that representing the dialogic structure of the debates in terms of agreement relations between speakers, greatly improves performance for stance classification, over models that operate on post content and parentpost context alone. 1

2010 ‘Narrative and Persuasion in Fashion Advertising
- Journal of Consumer Research
"... Narrative transportation—to be carried away by a story—has been proposed as a distinct route to persuasion. But as originally conceived, narrative transportation is unlikely to occur in response to advertisements, where persuasive intent is obvious and consumer resistance is expected. We analyze fas ..."

as a distinct route to persuasion. Inter-views showed that consumers variously engage ads to act, identify, feel, transport, or immerse. We explain how aesthetic properties of ads call forth different modes of engagement and explore how grotesque imagery can lead to either narrative transportation
ALGORITHMS AND COMPLEXITY RESULTS FOR PERSUASIVE ARGUMENTATION
, 2011
"... Value-based argumentation frameworks, as introduced by Bench-Capon, allow the abstract representation of persuasive argumentation. This formalism takes into account the relative strength of arguments with respect to some ordering which represents an audience. Deciding subjective or objective accept ..."

Persuasion with Reference Cues and Elaboration Costs
, 2013
"... We develop a model of persuasion where, consistently with the psychological literature on dual process theory, the persuadee has to sustain a cognitive effort – the elaboration cost – in order to fully and precisely elaborate information. The persuader makes an offer to the persuadee and, aware that ..."

The Persuasiveness of Stylistic Properties: the Moderating Role of Ideal-Self Vs. Ought-Self
, 2009
"... Two experiments were conducted to examine the moderating effect of self-concept in the persuasiveness of a stylistic propertycamera angle. Study 1 showed that, when an upward-looking camera angle is used to depict a product, respondents with salient oughtself (motivated by duties and obligations) g ..."
